Jessi: Hello, and welcome to Japanesepod101.com's JLPT Level 4 Last Minute Prep Course. I'm Jessi and I'm joined here by
Naomi:こんにちは。なおみです。JLPT四級のレッスンへようこそ。
Jessi:This course is designed for those who are preparing for the JLPT Level 4 test. The course contains 6 lessons and will be published every Monday. Now Naomi, what do you think about the number of lessons? Are 6 lessons enough to prepare for JLPT Level 4?
Naomi: Well, yes and no. It depends on your current level. If you already know all Hiragana and Katakana and have already finished our Newbie Nihongo Dojo series and Beginner series season 4, then this 6 lesson course will really help you prepare for JLPT Level 4.
Jessi:I think this course would be a good review even if you're not taking the JLPT this year. OK. So Naomi-sensei, what are we studying in this lesson?
Naomi:今日は、文字と語彙のパートです。
Jessi:The test is made up of three sections,もじ・ごい, which is Writing-Vocabulary, ちょうかい, which is Listening, and ぶんぽう・どっかい, which is Reading-Grammar. In this lesson, we'll be focusing on もじ・ごいWriting-Vocabulary section.
Naomi:文字・語彙は時間が25分、もんだいが、40あります。
Jessi:The もじごい Writing-Vocabulary section has 40 questions and you have 25 minutes to finish them.
Naomi:4つのタイプの問題があります。もんだい1もんだい2もんだい3もんだい4です。
Jessi:There are four types of questions. They're called もんだい1 もんだい2 もんだい3 and もんだい4. もんだい means question. Now, we're going to go through these 4 types of questions, so we strongly recommend that you read the lesson notes as you listen to this course.
Naomi:そうですね。JLPTのレッスンは、レッスンノートを見たほうがわかりやすいと思います。
Jessi: Right, that helps you to understand more.
Naomi:あ、それから、JLPTは全部日本語です。ローマ字はありませんので、気をつけてください。レッスンノートにもローマ字はありません。
Jessi:Good point. The JLPT tests are entirely in Japanese. That means that all of the instructions, questions and answers are written in Japanese. No romaji is used on the test. Because this course is meant to prepare you for the JLPT, we didn't include any romaji in the lesson notes, so please be aware of that.
:*********もんだい1 2************
Jessi:OK. Naomi-sensei, can you read the instructions for もんだい 1 question 1?
Naomi:Sure. 下線の言葉は どう 読みますか。
Jessi:How do you read the underlined word?
Naomi:1・2・3・4から いちばん いい ものを えらびなさい。
Jessi:Choose the best answer from 1 to 4.
Naomi:下線 means underline ことば is word どう is how, and よみます is to read.
Jessi: So, the first sentence would be how do you read the underlined word.
Naomi:Right.どうよみますか is "How do you read it?" In もんだい1 you have to choose the right reading for Kanji.
Jessi:Can we hear the second sentence again?
Naomi:1・2・3・4から いちばん いい ものを えらびなさい。
Jessi:Let's break it down. (Naomi,1・2・3・4から) From 1234 (Naomi,いちばんいい)The best (もの) thing (を)object marking particle (えらびなさい)choose. So choose the best answer from 1 to 4. OK. Can you also read the instructions for もんだい2?
Naomi:I下線のことばは どう かきますか。and 1・2・3・4から いちばん いい ものを ひとつ えらびなさい。
Jessi:How do you write the underlined Hiragana in Kanji or Katakana.
Naomi:The instructions are almost the same. The only difference is どうかきますか。
Jessi: How do you write it. The rest of the sentence is exactly the same.
Naomi:This sentence pattern is pretty useful. どうよみますか is How do you read it. どうかきますか How do you write it. どういいますか would be...
Jessi:How do you say.
Naomi:どう思いますか。is
Jessi:What do you think? So in もんだい2 Question 2, it says どうかきますか"how do you write", so you need to choose the Kanji or Katakana that corresponds to the given Hiragana.
Naomi:For もんだい 1 and もんだい 2, you need to know the kanji and the correct reading for the 7 days of the week, the basic position words, and the 4 cardinal directions.
Jessi:The 7 days of the week are 日曜日、月曜日、火曜日 and so on.
Naomi:Right. But the よう kanji in 月曜日 won't be tested on level 4. The basic position words are 上、下、中、右、左 and so on.
Jessi:The 4 cardinal directions are 北 南 東 and 西 North, south east and west. It's written in the Lesson notes, so if you're not sure how to write them in kanji, please make sure to check the lesson notes.
Naomi:それから、数字も大切ですね。And the numbers are also important.
Jessi: Yes, you can practice writing the numbers in this lesson's Kanji close up.
:*******もんだい3**********
Jessi:OK. On to もんだい3. In もんだい3, you need to fill in the blanks. For example?
Naomi: 毎日コーヒーを。。。。
Jessi:1)のみます 2)たべます 3)します4)きます
So which verb would you choose to complete the sentence?
Naomi:This sentence would be 毎日コーヒーを飲みます
Jessi:I drink coffee everyday.
Naomi:もんだい3 is testing your basic vocab. So we recommend that you review basic adjectives and verbs from the Newbie and beginner lessons.
:*******もんだい4**********
Jessi:ON to もんだい4. Naomi-sensei, can you read the instructions for もんだい4?
Naomi:The second part is the same. So I'll just read the first part.下線の文とだいたい同じ意味の文はどれですか。
Jessi:Which of the following sentences has the closest meaning to the underlined sentence.
Naomi:Now, 文 is sentence だいたい is approximately or about, 同じ is same 意味 mean or meaning. So 大体同じ意味の文 means "the sentence that has about the same meaning".
Jessi:OK. So why don't we practice a little bit.
Naomi:Sounds good.
Jessi:Now please listen to the male voice. Then Naomi is going to read 4 different sentences. Your job is to choose the sentence which has the closest meaning to the original sentence.
Yuichiの声:ゆうべ、映画をみました。
Jessi:Choice 1
Naomi:きのうの夜映画を見ました。
Jessi:Choice2
Naomi:今日の朝、映画を見ました
Jessi:Choice3
Naomi:おとといの晩、映画を見ました。
Jessi:Choice4
Naomi:二日前、映画を見ます。
Jessi:OK the answer is...?
Naomi:Choice1 きのうの夜映画を見ました。(Jessi, I saw a movie last night) Because both ゆうべ and きのうの夜 mean last night.
Jessi:OK. Let's practice a little bit more.
Yuichiの声:くだものを食べます。
Jessi:Choice 1
Naomi:肉や魚を食べます
Jessi:Choice2
Naomi:すしや天ぷらを食べます
Jessi:Choice3
Naomi:バナナやりんごを食べます
Jessi:Choice4
Naomi:ラーメンやパスタを食べます
Jessi:OK, so the answer is...?
Naomi:Choice3 バナナやりんごを食べます. Because くだもの means fruit.
Jessi: He was saying that he eats fruit.
OK. That's all for this lesson.
