PROLOGUE
なんだかすごく気になる。
まだ数人にしか見せたことがないんだよ。というのは、僕は人にコレクションを見せると、抑えがきかなくなってしまうんだ。
それだけコレクションに命をかけてたら、そうなるわよね。
君、僕の家に来てそれを見たいかい?
お願いします。
INTRODUCTION
Yuuki: Yuukiです。
Rie: Rieです。
Peter: Peter here.
Marky: あれ? Just kidding. Sorry, unfortunately it’s me again Marky. So we are here to do our final installment on the Niigata dialect. Once again, we are joined in the studio by Yuuki さん and Rieさん。
Rie: こんにちは。

Lesson focus

Marky: So let’s get right into it guys. Today’s conversation is kind of a funny one I think. So today’s conversation is between who?
Yuuki: Aya and Ryokan.
Rie: Aya is my sister name again.
Yuuki: And Ryokan is very famous monk in Niigata.
Marky: Really?
Yuuki: Very long time ago.
Marky: All right. So we’ve got a monk and a sister. This conversation is going to be interesting. What do you say we check it out?

良寛: ウソじゃないって。この目でちゃんと見たんだぞ!

POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuuki: 今日の会話、どうでしたか?
Rie: Ryokanさんとうちの妹がひどいことになってます。
Yuuki: Ryokanさん、かわいそうですね。
Markyl: Yeah who would steal a dog from the monk? Okay, what do you say we take a look at some vocabulary. First we have,
Yuuki: おめぇ。
Marky: You, very, very, very casual form.
Yuuki: おめぇ。おめぇ。
Marky: In the previous lessons, we saw a different version of this.
Yuuki: おめさん。
Marky: Is there a difference?
Yuuki: Only politeness level is different.
Marky: So how polite is this form?
Yuuki: おめぇ is rude way to say you. In the first line, we saw another word for you, な and this comes from which word?
Yuuki: あなた
Rie: おめぇ、どこの人らいや。
Yuuki: おめぇ、どこから来たの?
Marky: Hey you, where are you from? And next we have.
Rie: がめる。
Marky: To steal.
Rie: がめる。がめる。おめぇ、どこでこんげがんがめてきたんら?
Yuuki: お前、どこからこんなの盗んできたの?
Marky: Who wrote these sentences? This one means where did you steal such a thing? Okay next we have
Yuuki: いんや
Marky: No.
Yuuki: いんや。いんや。いんや is like いいえ or いや
Marky: So that’s the standard word for no.
Yuuki: Right.
Marky: Can you give us a sample sentence?
Rie: いんや、猿は最高らよ。
Yuuki: いいや、猿は最高だぞ。
Marky: No, monkeys are the best thing ever.
Rie: 何この文?
Marky: Now I know who wrote these. Okay next we have
Rie: がん。
Marky: Thing.
Rie: がん。がん。
Marky: And this actually isn’t a word by itself. This is a suffix that means thing. So this is actually a euphonic suffix. It doesn’t actually translate into English or even into standard Japanese but it helps the flow of the sentence because the intonation of this dialect is not the same as standard Japanese. So sometimes, some words or particles are attached to things simply to make the sentence flow. Rieさん、 Can you give us an example?
Rie: この車がん、ものすっげぇ高いんよ。
Yuuki: この車すごい高いんだぞ。
Marky: This car is really expensive. Okay next we have
Yuuki: だすけ
Marky: So.
Yuuki: だすけ。だすけ。
Marky: What is this in standard Japanese?
Yuuki: だから
Marky: Okay. So easy enough to follow. Can you show us how to use it?
Rie: だすけ、やめろ言うたねっけ。
Yuuki: だから、やめろって言っただろ。
Marky: That’s why I told you not to do that. Okay next we have
Rie: こく
Marky: To tell, to say, to talk, to do.
Rie: こく。こく。
Marky: So this has a lot of meanings. Can you give us a few examples?
Rie: このうそこきが。
Marky: You liar!
Rie: このねぼこきが。
Marky: You over sleeper, you person who always oversleeps.
Rie: このまねこきが。
Marky: You impersonator.
Rie: うそこくとたがくぞ。
Marky: Stop lying or I will slap you. Next we have
Yuuki: しゃっつける
Marky: To hit someone.
Yuuki: しゃっつける。しゃっつける。
Rie: しゃっつけっろ。
Yuuki: たたくぞ。
Marky: I will slap you. This is some very useful Niigata dialect for you. You are going to make some friends when you go to Niigata. So Yuuki san, what was your favorite grammatical item in this dialogue?
Yuuki: I like ろ
Marky: And why is that?
Yuuki: It sounds cool.
Marky: So what does it mean? Where did we see it in the dialogue?
Rie: だすけ、おれが見てたって言うてっろ。
Marky: Because I saw you doing it. So what is this in the standard language.
Yuuki: だろ。
Marky: So this is the volitional form of the copula but what happened to the だ sound?
Yuuki: だ sound changed to ろ in Niigata dialect.
Marky: So that sound just changed.
Yuuki: Right.
Marky: Can you show us the couple other ways to use this?
Rie: 明日、東京行くんろ?
Yuuki: 明日、東京に行くんだろ?
Marky: You are going to Tokyo tomorrow. Aren’t you?
Rie: 来週は雪が降るろ。
Yuuki: 来週は雪が降るだろう。 Next week, it will probably snow. So Rieさん、 what was your favorite grammar in this conversation?
Rie: がん。がんですね。
Marky: So this is the one we mentioned is put in for euphonic reasons. What does this mean again?
Rie: この言葉は、Thingという意味で、AdjectiveやNounに付けます。
Marky: So this word means thing or things and it is attached to nouns or adjectives and as we said, it’s attached for euphonic reasons. It just helps the sentence flow.
Rie: うんめがん。
Yuuki: うまいもの。
Marky: Delicious things.
Rie: このがん。あのがん。そのがん。どのがん。
Yuuki: これ、あれ、それ、どれ。
Marky: This thing, that thing over there, that thing, what thing. Yuuki, is there any other interesting grammar in here?
Yuuki: れ
Marky: I like this one too.
Yuuki: This means close to standard Japanese is ぞ
Marky: Okay so this is a particle?
Yuuki: Right. This is attached to end of sentences and makes the sentences offensive.
Marky: So this is a pretty strong particle. How often do you use this?
Rie: ほとんど毎日使います。
Yuuki: 誰に?
Rie: おめぇに。
Marky: So can you give us an example of how to use this?
Rie: がめんがん見たれ。
Yuuki: 盗んだの見たぞ。
Marky: You stole it, I saw it.
Rie: この財布、盗んだれ。
Marky: I stole this wallet.
Rie: 夕飯できたれ。

Outro

Marky: Dinner is ready and of course, in that last sentence, it’s not offensive. It’s just emphasis. And that is about all the time we have.
Yuuki: Rieさん、どうでしたか?
Rie: 猿が大好きになりました。
Marky: あ、そうなんですか?I think all of the Japanese dialects are very cool because this isn’t just the Tokyo style, this is something that goes very deep in to Japanese history and deep into local culture. I feel like we can learn like the heart and soul of Japan through the dialects. So this is really exciting for me.
Yuuki: よかった。
Rie: よかった。みなさん新潟弁を勉強して、食べ物もおいしくてお酒もおいしくて、スキーもスノーボードもできる新潟に遊びに来て下さいね。そっでは、まず。
