Kat: Today was Josh's birthday.
サプライズパーティーをしてあげた。
Kat: We gave him a surprise party.
ジョシュは驚いて、最初「あー」とか「うー」とかしか言えなかった。
Kat: Josh was so surprised that at first he could only say "ahh" and "ohh."
とてもおかしかった。
Kat: It was really funny.
お父さんとお母さんはジョシュにネクタイを買ってあげた。
Kat: Mom and Dad bought Josh a tie.
でも、僕はお金がないから、似顔絵をかいてあげた。
Kat: But I don't have any money, so I drew him a portrait.
食事の後、ジョシュは日本語学校の宿題をしていた。
Kat: After we ate, Josh did his Japanese school homework.
少し間違いがあったので、直してあげた。
Kat: He made some mistakes, so I corrected them for him.
明日はジョシュの引越しだ。
Kat: Tomorrow Josh is moving out.
朝早くおきて、手伝ってあげるつもりだ。
Kat: I plan to get up early and help him.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: 似顔絵。似顔絵のプレゼント。いいアイディアですね。
Kat: You think a portrait would be a good gift?
Naomi: うん。似顔絵かいてもらったことないので。嬉しいかも。
Kat: Ah... You've never had someone draw your portrait? 描いてあげましょうか?! Shall I draw one for you?
Naomi: え、本当?絵が上手なの?Are you good at drawing?
Kat: Mmm, I'm not bad at cute cartoon type drawing, but real people... hmm!
Naomi: ほおお。お願いします、是非。Speaking of gifts, キャットさんは、最近誰かに何かをあげました?
Kat: Have I recently given anything to someone? うーん、あ、そうだ!彼氏にパスケースをあげました。
Naomi: パスケース?
Kat: I gave my boyfriend a pass case for his travel card. I don’t know if that’s English...like you know, a little leather case to put in…ah...
Naomi: Commuter pass.
Kat: Yeah, commuter pass, that’s right! There is a commuter pass inside. Because he was always losing it, and blaming me, so...
Naomi: あ~なるほどね。Some people put there 名詞 in it.
Kat: Ah, business cards? Ah I see. Yeah, so just a little case like that.
VOCAB LIST
Kat: OK. So now, let's take a look at the vocabulary for this lesson.
And the first word we are going to see is:
Naomi: 驚く [natural native speed]
Kat: to be surprised, to be astonished
Naomi: 驚く [slowly - broken down by syllable]
Naomi: 驚く [natural native speed]
Kat: And next:
Naomi: おかしい [natural native speed]
Kat: funny, strange
Naomi: おかしい [slowly - broken down by syllable]
Naomi: おかしい [natural native speed]
Kat: And next:
Naomi: 食事 [natural native speed]
Kat: meal
Naomi: 食事 [slowly - broken down by syllable]
Naomi: 食事 [natural native speed]
Kat: And next:
Naomi: 直す [natural native speed]
Kat: to fix, to correct
Naomi: 直す [slowly - broken down by syllable]
Naomi: 直す [natural native speed]
Kat: And finally:
Naomi: 間違い [natural native speed]
Kat: mistake
Naomi: 間違い [slowly - broken down by syllable]
Naomi: 間違い [natural native speed]
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Kat: OK. So now, let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Kat: And the first one we are going to look at is?
Naomi: おかしい
Kat: funny, laughable. Naomi-sensei, okashii can also mean “strange” or “weird”, can't it?
Naomi: あ、そうですね。言い方やContext によりますね。
Kat: So, which way the word is translated depends on the context and how it's said.
Naomi: うん。英語のfunny と似ていますよね。
Kat: Um. Yeah, I suppose so. おかしい is similar to English funny. It's a bit different from 面白い. I actually tend to use おかしい to mean "weird", but it might be a personal thing.
Kat: OK. What's next?
Naomi: 間違い
Kat: mistake
Naomi: Some people say 間違え instead of 間違い
Kat: Yeah. I've actually noticed that. Some people replace the final "i" in まちがい to "e". I actually did that myself.
Naomi: 私も。
Kat: Ah! So which is correct?
Naomi: I think both are correct, since both of them are in the dictionary.
Kat: Ah Ok. Great. So can we have a sample sentence please?
Naomi: 間違いありません。
Kat: "There's no mistake". Of course, 間違えありません is also OK, right?
Naomi: はい。
Kat: And this phrase, 間違いありません or 間違えありません is used to mean "I'm positive."or "that's right" in a conversation, isn’t it?
Naomi: はい、そうです。
Kat: It can be one of those things that people say almost as a reflex when agreeing.
Naomi: そう。間違えありません。(笑)Like that.
LESSON FOCUS
Kat: The focus of this lesson is how to say "to do something for someone else”
Naomi: First let's look at the formation.
Kat: The formation is [te-form of a verb]+ageru. For example how do you say "to make"?
Naomi: 作る
Kat: And Te form is ?
Naomi: 作って
Kat: Attach あげる
Naomi: 作ってあげる
Kat: To make something for someone.
Naomi: So すしを作ってあげる is...
Kat: To make sushi for someone
Naomi: How about this sentence...私は家族にすしを作ってあげる。
Kat: "I'll make sushi for my family." Notice that the person who receives benefit is marked by the particle に.
Naomi: Actually, sometimes the person who receives the benefit of the action is marked by the particle を for some verbs.
Kat: But let's stick to the particle に in this lesson.
Naomi: Good idea.
Kat: Listeners, please repeat.
Naomi: 私は家族にすしを作ってあげる。
Kat: (Pause) Listeners, say "I'll make sushi for my family."
Naomi: 私は家族にすしを作ってあげる。
Kat: Ok. So let's do one more. How do you say "to teach"?
Naomi: 教える
Kat: And te form is?
Naomi: 教えて
Kat: Attach あげる
Naomi: 教えてあげる
Kat: "To teach something to someone" or maybe "to teach something to someone (after being asked to by that person)".
Naomi: So 英語を教えてあげる means
Kat: "I teach (someone) English."
Naomi: Here's a sample sentence. ジョシュは大地に英語を教えてあげる。
Kat: "Josh teaches Daichi English."
Kat: Listeners, repeat.
Naomi: ジョシュは大地に英語を教えてあげる
Kat: (Pause)Listeners, say "Josh teaches Daichi English" in Japanese.
Naomi: ジョシュは大地に英語を教えてあげる
Kat: So how was it?
Naomi: キャットさんは最近誰かに何かをしてあげましたか?
Kat: えーと、そうですね。うーん。あ、友達に誕生日ケーキを作ってあげました。
Naomi: おーすごい!ケーキ作ってあげたんだ。
Kat: 作ってあげました。I made a birthday cake for my friend quite recently. But I don’t know if it was good or not.
Naomi: 多分美味しかったと思いますよ。
Kat: Thank you so much. I think it’s 気持ちだけThe feeling made a making cake is probably better than the taste. The formation of Te-ageru isn't so difficult, is it? However there are some things you should be careful when using ageru, so be sure to read the lesson notes.
Naomi: それじゃあまた。
Kat: Bye bye! See you next time!

zienaさん、こんにちは。

コメントありがとうございます!

There's not much difference.

So saying「funnyに似ている」is also okay.

と似ている is used to indicate the basis of a difference.

に似ている is used to indicate the basis of a comparison.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Erica

Emsさん、

こんにちは!😄

えらいですね!👍😇 私も家の掃除をしなければなりません…😅

Below, please check the corrected version and feel free to ask us questions if any! ;)

昨日、旦那に掃除と料理をしてあげました。

これは最近ではちょっと古風だと思います。

でも、時間があったら、するべきだと思います。

そうでなければ、一日中、テレビとかネットとかを見てばかりいると思います。

あ、もちろん、日本語も勉強します。😄

Yesterday, I cleaned and cooked for my husband.

These days I think that is a little old fashioned.

But if I have the time I should do it.

Otherwise, I think I'd do nothing but, like watch TV or the browse the internet all day.

Ah, and of course, study Japanese too.

毎週りんじんに食料品と水を買ってあげる。年取った人だから、重い物を運べない。

Every week I buy groceries for my neighbour. She cannot carry heavy things, because she is an old person.

正しいですか。

ありがとうございます。

Johnna-san,

konnichiwa!

It's not an extra line; this line has to be included.

In PDF (Lesson Notes), both kanji and hiragana version have that line,

so what you meant was in line-by-line audio, right?

Thank you very much for letting us know! You're right.

Kanji version misses this last part.

We'll fix it as soon as possible.

The translation in hiragana seems a little different than the kanji. There's an extra line in hiragana that I can't find in the kanji version... はやくおきて。。。つもり。。。

The other difference is it says 日本語学校 in kanji, but 日本語クラス in the hiragana version. Any chance it can be corrected to match? ありがとうございます、よろしくお願いします、ジャナ (Johnna)

Charlie-san,

konnichiwa!

I understand your struggle...

We need to know the negative 'nai' form to find out which class a verb belongs to.
