John: Do You Speak English? In this lesson, you'll learn how to ask and answer the question “Do you speak English?” in Japanese.

John: Here's a way to ask "Do you speak English?"
Risa: [Normal] 英語、話せますか。(Eigo hanasemasu ka.)
John: First is a word meaning "English."
Risa: [Normal] 英語 [Slow] 英語 (Eigo)
John: Next is the word meaning "can speak."
Risa: [Normal] 話せます [Slow] 話せます(hanasemasu)
John: Last is the question particle.
Risa: [Normal] か [Slow] か(ka)
John: Note the rising intonation. Listen again to the question meaning "Do you speak English?"
Risa: [Slow] 英語、話せますか。 [Normal] 英語、話せますか。
John: Here's the alternative way to ask, "Do you speak English?"
Risa: [Normal] 英語、分かりますか。(Eigo wakarimasu ka.)
John: First is a word meaning "English."
Risa: [Normal] 英語 [Slow] 英語 (Eigo)
John: Next is the word meaning "understand."
Risa: [Normal] 分かります [Slow] 分かります(wakarimasu)
John: Last is the question particle.

John: Note that you need to pause after the word meaning “English.” Listen again to the question meaning "Do you speak English?"

Cultural Insight
John: Now, it's time for a quick cultural insight.
Risa: In Japan, when you want to ask something in English, it would be better to ask the question first - "Do you speak English?" Because many Japanese people are so kind, they may feel really confused and sorry if they cannot reply to you well in English.
