Eric: We are stay – but didn’t you just say we are going somewhere?
Naomi: No, no, no I mean Lori and Shizuka-san are going somewhere.
Eric: Lucky Lori. So where are they going?
Naomi: They are going to Nagano prefecture.
Eric: Nagano, hah! I haven’t been there. Have you been there Naomi Sensei?
Naomi: Yes I have. To Ski mountains.
Eric: You have been there to Ski?
Naomi: Yeah.
Eric: How was it?
Naomi: It was great.
Eric: When did you go, during the Olympics?
Naomi: No two or three years ago.
Eric: It sounds nice. I have actually never skied.
Naomi: あ、本当? Snowboard?
Eric: I am from Miami. The only snow I have seen is on the inside of my freezer cling to the walls.
Naomi: Maybe Yūki can show you how to snowboard. He is a professional.
Eric: Oh our producer and director, Yūkisan よろしくお願いします.
DIALOGUE
(In the train)
ロリー: 静さん、あれは富士山ですか。
LORI: Shizuka-san, is that Mt. Fuji?
静: え?あ、そうです。きれいですね。
SHIZUKA: Hm? Oh, yes it is. It's beautiful, isn't it?
ロリー: 今日、私たちは富士山へ行きますか。
LORI: Are we going to Mt. Fuji today?
静: いえ、行きません。
SHIZUKA: No, we aren't.
ロリー: そうですか。じゃ、どこへ行きますか。
LORI: Oh, really? So, where are we going?
静: ええっとぉ。。。水木さん、今日、どこに行きますか。
SHIZUKA: Ummm, Mizuki-san, where are we going today?
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Eric: Naomi Sensei, you know this is kind of unrelated but we never found out what type of shoes Lori bought?
Naomi: なんでシューズなの?
Eric: Because like she went to the shoe store.
Naomi: Yeah.
Eric: She took it forever.
Naomi: Okay.
Eric: And now we don’t know and we made a bet. Let’s leave that B. All right, that’s fine, we don’t know but this time, you know they are going somewhere and then they have to get there right. So let’s make a bet. Where do you think they are going?
Naomi: They are going to Nagano right?
Eric: Right. We talked about that right.
Naomi: Yeah.
Eric: So they are going to Nagano and Nagano is, it’s pretty big right?
Naomi: Yeah it’s a huge prefecture. Lots of mountains.
Eric: It’s good for hiking right?
Naomi: Yeah maybe they are going hiking or mountain climbing and there is one famous lake called 諏訪湖, Suwa Lake.
Eric: But you know what, I don’t think they are going to any of those places.
Naomi: [*] What do you think?
Eric: They are going to Nagano Olympic stadium.
Naomi: The Olympic Games has been finished right?
Eric: Yeah but the stadium is still there right?
Naomi: Hah!
Eric: They are going to go visit it and they are going to go feel the spirit of the Olympics. That’s my guess, okay. I put my money down right here. Right now, we will find out in the next episode.
Naomi: Okay.
Eric: Hopefully the Azusa express is faster than her deciding to buy shoes. All right, so answer the vocabulary.
Naomi: 次は単語です。
VOCAB LIST
Naomi: 富士山
Eric: Mount Fuji.
Naomi: (slow)ふじさん (natural speed) 富士山
Eric: The next word is
Naomi: きれい
Eric: Beautiful.
Naomi: (slow)きれい (natural speed) きれい
Eric: The next word is
Naomi: 私たち
Eric: We, us.
Naomi: (slow)わたしたち (natural speed) 私たち
Eric: The next word is
Naomi: 行きます
Eric: To go
Naomi: (slow)いきます (natural speed) 行きます
Eric: And the last word is
Naomi: 今日
Eric: Today, this day.
Naomi: (slow)きょう (natural speed) 今日
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Eric: All right. So let’s take a closer look at some of these words. First we have....
Naomi: 今日
Eric: Today.
Naomi: きょう。
Eric: All right. Did you listen to that pitch accent? One more time Naomi Sensei.
Naomi: きょう。
Eric: It starts high and goes low.
Naomi: 今日。
Eric: All right so 今日 today. What’s the kanji for 今日 Naomi Sensei?
Naomi: Present day.
Eric: And if you were to separate them, what would each – what’s each one?
Naomi: The first kanji is 今. It means now and the second kanji is 日 which means day. So now day.
Eric: Today but if you read this kanji by themselves, they don’t add up to 今日. Do they?
Naomi: No it’s a irregular reading.
Eric: Okay and if you were to say with the real reading of this kanji as well, what do you say?
Naomi: こんにち。
Eric: So can you use this pronunciation of こんにち actually like in real conversation?
Naomi: Yeah in the formal conversation, こんにち is used but it has different meaning.
Eric: It doesn’t mean today?
Naomi: It usually doesn’t mean today. It means present time or present days, recently.
Eric: All right. Sounds interesting.
Naomi: And please also check 昨日 and 明日
Eric: Okay 昨日 which is
Naomi: Yesterday.
Eric: And
Naomi: 明日
Eric: Tomorrow.
Naomi: 次は文法です。
Eric: Okay on to the grammar.
LESSON FOCUS
Eric: What are we looking at today?
Naomi: 行きます。行きますか and 行きません。
Eric: I am going, are you going or I am not going. All right, so, so far, we have been studying です sentences right.
Naomi: はい。
Eric: Like something です but now we have a verb 行きます right to go somewhere. Can we use です with 行きます?
Naomi: 行きますです。 No. Usually don’t.
Eric: So how will we put this together into a sentence?
Naomi: Topic は place へ, 行きます For example, 私は富士山へ行きます。
Eric: And this へ, this sounds a lot like a particle.
Naomi: へ It indicates place or direction and in this case, particle に can replace へ.
Eric: So basically へ and に are interchangeable.
Naomi: そうですね。 In this case.
Eric: Okay so if I say, I am going to Mount Fuji, I would say?
Naomi: 私は富士山に行きます or 私は富士山へ行きます。
Eric: So how would I say, we are going to Mount Fuji?
Naomi: 私たちは富士山へ行きます。
Eric: All right so nothing changes except for the subject which it could be me, it could be you, it could be us...
Naomi: そうですね。
Eric: It could be them and it’s always going to be 富士山へ行きます。
Naomi: はい。
Eric: That’s pretty simple. Okay Naomi Sensei, so we just talked about 行きます to go and are you going?
Naomi: 行きますか?
Eric: What if I am not going?
Naomi: 行きません。 Change ます to ません。
Eric: Which makes it?
Naomi: Negative.
Eric: All right. And as you will see, this rule is pretty consistent among most verbs but for now, we are talking about going. Okay so let’s practice this. I am going to Mount Fuji.
Naomi: Okay I am going to use へ for today.
Eric: Sounds good.
Naomi: 私は富士山へ行きます。
Eric: Are you going to Mount Fuji?
Naomi: 富士山へ行きますか?
Eric: I am not going to Mount Fuji.
Naomi: 私は富士山へ行きません。 If you master this sentence pattern, you can ask about the transportation.
Eric: Right. So it could be anything. It could be bus, train, Airplane.
Naomi: Ship, ferry, boat.
Eric: Submarine.
Naomi: はい。
Eric: So for example, if I were to get on my UFO and go to Paris, how would I say, I am going to Paris.
Naomi: パリに行きます。
Eric: That’s simple. You know what, I bought a new spaceship. You want to know if I am going to the moon with it.
Naomi: Moon is 月. So 月へ行きますか?
Eric: はい。行きます。 That’s right.
Naomi: そうなんだ。
Eric: Yeah you want to come?
Naomi: Sure.
Eric: Okay but for now, let’s take the bus. Does this bus go to Tokyo station?
Naomi: This bus このバス。このバスは、東京駅に行きますか?
Eric: No, no this bus doesn’t go to Tokyo station.
Naomi: いえ、行きません。
Eric: Let’s throw some こそあど words in the mix. What if you want to know where this bus goes? You have no idea.
Naomi: このバスはどこに行きますか?
Eric: Remember どこ that’s where.
Naomi: Or これはどこに行きますか?
Eric: Okay so let’s practice some more Naomi Sensei.
Naomi: はい。
Eric: So you are at the bus depot and you want to go to Narita airport by bus. So you went to the bus terminal and you asked the clerk, does this bus go to Narita?
Naomi: すみません。このバスは成田に行きますか?
Eric: And the clerk says, no, it doesn’t.
Naomi: いいえ、行きません。
Eric: And the moment you found that out, you just missed the bus. So you decided to go to Narita by Train. So now you go to the station and you find the Narita express which is very fast by the way.
Naomi: But a bit expensive.
Eric: Yeah it’s twice the price of regular train hah! So you want to confirm if that’s the right train and the way you confirm it is by checking the price of your ticket but then again, you can confirm it by asking the clerk.
Naomi: これは成田へ行きますか?
Eric: And then the clerk says, yes.
Naomi: はい、行きます。
Eric: It’s the Narita express after all.
Naomi: そうですね。
OUTRO
Eric: All right. It’s almost time for us to run to the Narita express but before we go, I want to tell you about our combo tracks on japanesepod101.com all right. Hi Then,

Thank you for the question! When talking about destination, both に and へ are used interchangeably. But there are certain cases in which they can't be interchangeable. Please check out the following lessons for に particle.

Hey, is there a simple explanation for which different contexts are correct to use kore/sore/are and kono/sono/ano?
