Wi-Fi options in Japan

Postby MacGyver » April 27th, 2006 11:49 am

Besides the Wi-fi hotspots like Starbucks and various internet cafes, what other options are there for frequent travelers to Japan that need internet access for their laptops?

I usually travel to Japan 2x a year, and stay with my in-laws. The one internet cafe nearby closed down, and my in-laws don't have DSL. If there was something like the Verizon Wireless Broadband service that we have in USA, I'd like to use it - perhaps something I can rent while in Japan (I'm usually there for 2-4 weeks at a time)

I've seen the wireless PC cards in the laptops on display at stores like Bic Camera, but don't know how to sign up for the service, or if they even offer short-term rentals.
Would I have to sign up for the 2 year contracts they have and then keep paying for the monthsthat I'm not there?

Anyone have any tips they can share?

This seems to be a useful site- haven't tested it out, but definitely plan to.
