A difficult... travel issue... cannot fly.

Postby Hikaritennyo » September 13th, 2009 7:02 am

I would like to go to Japan with my husband when I graduate from college.
We have both been to Japan in the past and have friends there.
The problem is, he has developed a medical issue that does not allow him to fly.
Long story short, the doctors say the pressurization could kill/paralyze him...
So, I was wondering where to even look for alternate transport?
I have heard there are shipping companies that will take passengers?
We live near the west coast, and I don't even think a cruise ship makes the whole trip!

If anyone has any ideas, I would be greatly appreciative!

I found this with a Google search
http://www.freightercruises.com/frames. ... anspacific
There's one that goes to Yokohama.
It takes about 11 days one way at circa $90 a day
I also found this url
http://www.freighterworld.com/index.html

and lots of references to your request!

I remember Michael Palin did something like this when recreating around the world in 80 days.

I knew there were freighters taking passengers, I just didn't know they charged through the nose for the privilege.

Unfortunately, at (Euro(€)95 per person per day), with two week travel times, we could invite our Japanese friends to Las Vegas, put them up in rooms, and pay for their flights.

Our entire travel budget would be spent on... travel!
I guess I was thinking of options with fewer frills... such as crew quarters type accommodations.

It never hurts to ask a community, because occasionally, there will be an idea from completely out in left field that the person asking would never have thought of.

If anyone finds some other dirt cheap options, we would be greatly appreciative. I've been considering the JET program, but if this is my travel option for my hubby, I may just have to give up on that dream. I do not want to spend an entire year apart (at least) just for me to go to Japan.
Beginning is easy
Continuing is hard
