chiisana sakanaga orimashita

I am trying to practice by reading a japanese kids book and don't understand what orimashita means. Could anyone please help? :)

Reading children books is a good study tip!
Orimasu is from ‘oru’ which means ‘be or stay or exist’ is the same as ‘iru.’
Oru is slightly more polite than iru and sounds a bit old.
Therefore, ‘chiisana sakanaga orimashita’ means ‘small fish was there.’
