A few sentences

Hey, I've been studying Japanese for a few months now. Now I'm trying to make solid sentences.

Are the sentences below grammatically correct?


I am going to school.
"Watashi wa gakkou ni itta."

Are you waiting to watch TV?
"Anata wa terebi o miru matte imasu ka."

The first one is in the past tense - I believe it should be gakkou ni itte imasu (or itte iru). I think the second one is ok!

Matsu is transitive, so you need to use 'o', but since the object is a verb phrase ending in 'miru', you need to normalise it (turn it into a noun) with 'no'. For basic grammar, it's a fairly advanced point, so I'd wait until you reach that lesson in your textbook or JPod or whatever you're following.

I think "gakkou ni itte iru" is more like, "I'm at school". "gakkou in iku" probably is fine, depending on the context.
