Intermediate Lesson #38
INTRODUCTION
Yoshi: Yoshiです。
Peter: Peter here. Part 3 of our diary series. Now this lesson will be mostly in Japanese. So if this level is too advanced, stop by japanesepod101.com. We have other levels there. Also if you missed the first two parts of this series, stop by japanesepod101.com and listen to those.
Natsuko: Yoshi
Yoshi:
Natsuko: Agnes
Yoshi: はい。
Natsuko: Yoshi
Yoshi:
Natsuko:
Natsuko:
Natsuko:
Natsuko:
Peter:
Peter:
Natsuko:
DIALOGUE
Natsuko:
Welcome.
Hello I came to find the place.
You are in luck. After all, this is the most caring real estate office in the world. If you leave it to me, we will find you a good place.
Sounds good.
What kind of place you are looking for?
I am looking for a place with a kitchen and bath included.
Huh! Oh there is a 4.5 mat room near here.
Is there not a bigger room about 6 mats?
What’s your budget per month?
Well around ¥50000 to ¥60000 and the closer to the station, the better.
Near the station it gets a bit pricy but oh, there is a place for ¥65000, a five minute walk from the station.
Oh that looks nice. Are there any others?
We also have a place for about ¥50,000. It’s not new but it’s on the second floor and gets a lot of sunlight. It’s a bit of a walk from the station though.
How far?
About 15 minutes.
That’s not bad.
By the way, where are you from young lady?
Fukushima.
That’s a nice place.
There is nothing there but the nature is beautiful.
Would you like to have a look at these two places?
Yes please.
I have to show a few other places today. So are you free tomorrow?
Yes tomorrow is fine.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Peter: Natsuko
Peter: Yeah this real estate agent seems like there is something a little strange about him, something just not right.
Natsuko:
Peter: I think we will find out next week when we see the rooms.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Natsuko:
Peter: Studio apartment, one room apartment.
Natsuko: Yoshi
Yoshi:
Peter: Studio apartments in Tokyo are small and expensive.
Yoshi:
Peter: Counter for Tatami mats.
Peter: So when you rent a room in Japan, they often refer to the room size in this measurement 畳 1.6 square meters. So often when you talk to your friends, you may say how big is your room and they will answer in the number plus this measurement 6畳 6 Tatami mats.
Peter: 4.5 Tatami mats.
Natsuko: 6畳
Peter: 6 Tatami mats.
Peter: By foot, on foot.
Natsuko:
Peter: 5 minutes from the station on foot.
Peter:
Natsuko:
書いてある数字、だいたい×2、The number that’s there x 2.
Natsuko: It depends on who is walking. What state?
Peter: That’s funny.
Yoshi:
Peter: Budget.
Yoshi: Natsuko
Natsuko:
Peter: That’s over my budget.
Natsuko:
Peter: Next year’s budget was approved by the Diet.
Natsuko:
Peter: If possible
Peter: This comes from the verb できる just in its ば conditional できれば very straightforward.
Yoshi:
Peter: Sunshine.
Yoshi: Natsuko
Natsuko:
Peter: This room gets a lot of sun.
Natsuko:
Peter: Because there wasn’t enough sun here, the flower died.
Peter: Not sunshine, not the raise itself but the amount of sun. So when you go to rent a place, you definitely want to ask about this. Usually in the advertisement itself, there is something about this 日当たりがいい or something like this especially in a country where there aren’t that many dryers.

Lesson focus

Peter: Is there not something, are there not something? For example, in the conversation, we had
Natsuko:
Peter: Is there not a bigger room? This is one pattern of asking whether or not there is something.

Outro

Peter: Okay there will be more about this inside the PDF. That’s going to do for today.
Natsuko:
Yoshi: またね。
