Yuichi: 今度は英語が入ります。
桜井典子:久しぶりー。
Jessi: Hey, long time no see…
桜井典子:あれー?真由ちゃん、やせたー?
Jessi: Hm? Mayu, have you lost weight?
田中真由:あ、分かる?少し細くなったでしょ。
Jessi: Oh, you can tell? I'm a bit slimmer, aren't I?
田中真由:実は、ダイエットしているんだー。
Jessi: Actually, I'm on a diet.
桜井典子:そうなんだー!何してるの?
Jessi: Really? What kind of diet are you doing?
田中真由:フルーツダイエット。すごく簡単だよ。
Jessi: A fruit diet. It's really easy.
田中真由:毎朝、果物をたべるようにするだけ。
Jessi: I just make sure to eat fruit every morning.
桜井典子:へー!いつ頃からはじめたの?
Jessi: Wow! When did you start it?
田中真由:半年前。
Jessi: Half a year ago.
桜井典子:肌もきれいになったんじゃない?
Jessi: Your skin has gotten clearer too, hasn't it?
桜井典子:いいなぁ・・・。私も頑張ろうっと。
Jessi: Lucky...I've got to work hard too.
田中真由:今、何かしているの?
Jessi: Are you doing something now?
桜井典子:うん。実はウォーキングダイエットを始めたの。
Jessi: Yeah. I've started a walking diet.
田中真由:へー。健康によさそう!
Jessi: Wow, that sounds really good for your health.
桜井典子:毎朝、公園を歩くようにしているの。
Jessi: I'm making an effort to walk through the park every morning.
桜井典子:それから、夕飯も早い時間に食べるようにしているんだ。
Jessi: I'm also making an effort to eat dinner at an earlier time.
田中真由:へー。でも、毎朝歩くのは、大変でしょ。えらいねぇ。
Jessi: Oh yeah? But it must be tough to go walking every morning. Good for you.
桜井典子:あたし歩くの好きだから、大丈夫。でも・・・
Jessi: It's fine because I love to go walking. But...
田中真由:でも?
Jessi: But...?
桜井典子:ウォーキング始めてから太ったんだよね。
Jessi: I've gained weight since I've started going walking!
桜井典子:運動すると、お腹がすごい空くから、ご飯をたくさん食べるようになって・・・。
Jessi: When I exercise, I get really hungry, and I've started eating a lot...
田中真由:ああ・・・。
Jessi: Ohh...
桜井典子: それに、夕飯の時間が早いから、夜10時にはお腹ぺこぺこなの。
Jessi: And plus, my dinner time is early, so by ten at night I'm starving!
桜井典子:だから、夜食を食べるようになって・・・。三キロくらい太った。
Jessi: So I've started eating late night snacks...I've gained three kilos!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuichi: 今回のダイアログでは、二人の女性が出てきましたよね。一人は天然キャラっぽくないですか。
Naomi: あぁ、ダイエットしたけど、3キロも太っちゃった!って言ってた桜井さんでしょ?
Jessi: 天然キャラとは・・・何ですか?
Yuichi: 「天然キャラ」というのは、わざと面白いことをしようとか、言おうとかしていないのに、その人が常識が外れていて、結果的に、他の人には、面白く見える人のことですね。
Jessi: あー、なるほど。So, someone who doesn't purposely try to act funny or say funny things, but comes across as funny because they're just not as in touch with things. They're a little off.
Naomi: そう、“a little off” っていう感じね、本当にね。人と少しずれている、変わってて、それが面白い・・・んですけど、どちらかというと、のんびりした感じの人を指すと思います。
私的には、こう、ゆういちさんなんかがちょっと天然キャラ入ってるんじゃないかと・・・・。
Yuichi: 僕ですか。
Naomi: ちょっとだけ天然入ってるなー、と思います。
Yuichi: あー、あの、これは、褒めているんですかね?
Naomi: う〜ん、はい。(笑)
Yuichi: で、あの、桜井さんは「ダイエットをしたのに、体重が増えてしまった」と言っていましたけど、そこがちょっと変というか、おかしいんですよね。しゃべり方ものんびりしてて、その辺が「天然だな~」と思います。
Jessi: So, Sakurai-san did go on a diet, but ended up gaining weight. Something's a bit off there... so that kind of thing makes her a 天然キャラ。
Naomi: 英語だと「天然」とかってある?
Jessi: Ah, I would say we will call someone like that airhead, something like that. Like in their heads, nothing but air.
Naomi: あ〜、そうなんだ。
Jessi: Might be similar.
Yuichi: それって、いい意味ですか?
Jessi: あー、いい意味では・・・ないですね。
Naomi: 日本語だと、どうなんでしょうね?そんなに悪い意味ではない?
Yuichi: うーん・・・そうですね。さっきのなおみさんが僕に言ったのは・・・?
Naomi: い、いい意味ですよ!面白いね〜、みたいな、ね。
Yuichi: ま、時と場合による、ということですね。
Naomi: そうですね。言い方かな?

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Yuichi: 最初の単語は、細い
Jessi: thin, slim
Naomi: 例えば、「体が細い」。
Jessi: “One's body is slim.”
Naomi: という風に使いますね。
Yuichi: これと似た単語に、「薄い」という単語もあります。
Jessi: 薄い is also translated as thin in English.
じゃあ、「細い」と「薄い」の違いは、何ですか?
Naomi: ドキっという感じですけど(笑)「細い」は 長細いものとか線とかに使いますね。
Yuichi: そうですね。例えば「細い線」
Jessi: thin line
Yuichi: 「細い腕」
Jessi: thin arm
So 細い is used to describe something that has a cylinder shape or is like a line.
Naomi: で、「薄い」は、厚さ "thickness" のことを言っています。たて、よこがあって、その厚み、厚さのことです。
Jessi: 薄い is used when describing more the width of something.
Yuichi: 例えば、「薄い本」
Jessi: thin book
Yuichi: 「薄いハム」
Jessi: thinly-sliced ham
Yuichi: 「薄いステーキ」
Jessi: thinly-sliced steak
Yuichi: ま、食べたくないですね。(笑)
Naomi: 厚いね、ステーキを食べたいですよね、食べるならね。
Yuichi: 次の単語は?
Naomi: 夜食
Jessi: late-night snack, midnight snack
Yuichi: 夜遅くまで起きているときに、食べるものです。
Jessi: 夜食 is a snack you eat late at night.
Yuichi: 例えば、リスナーのみなさん、夜遅くまで日本語を勉強したり、仕事をしているとお腹が減りますよね?夜中の12時とかに、ラーメンとかピザを食べたくなりませんか?
Jessi: う〜ん、わかります。
Naomi: ね、ちょっとわかりますね。
Yuichi: はい。そういう食べ物を夜食と言います。
Naomi: 例えば、こんな風に使います。「毎日、夜食を食べています。」
Jessi: “I eat a late-night snack every night.”
Naomi: う〜ん、太りそうですね。ではここで、他の「~食」という言葉を確認しましょう。まず
Yuichi: 「朝食」
Jessi: breakfast
Yuichi: 「昼食」
Jessi: lunch
Yuichi: 「夕食」
Jessi: dinner
Naomi: ここまでは、みなさん大丈夫ですよね?じゃあ、「間食」って知っていますか?
Yuichi: 「間食」
Jessi: a snack between meals
Naomi: 「間の食事」と書きますよね。
Yuichi: 例えば、朝食と昼食の間とか、昼食と夕食の間に食べるお菓子とかのことを言います。
Naomi: 朝食、昼食、夕食はきちんとした食事ですよね。ただ、間食と夜食は snack に近いと思います。例文をお願いします。
Yuichi: 毎日、間食してしまう。
Jessi: “I eat between meals every day.”
Yuichi: 「する」をつけて、「間食する」という形で使います。
Naomi: そうですね。なぜかわからないけど、「間食を食べる」とは絶対言わないんですよね。
Yuichi: そうですね。朝食、昼食、夕食、夜食は「食べる」という風に言うんですけどもね。

Lesson focus

Jessi: In this lesson, we'll learn the difference between an adjective plus なる and an adjective plus する. Now なる and する can follow verbs too, so for more on how they're used with verbs, please check out the PDF.
Naomi: じゃ、「形容詞」 plus「する」から勉強しましょう。
Jessi: Yes. Let's start with adjectives plus する. Can we hear a sample sentence?
Yuichi: コーヒーを甘くした。
Jessi: "I made the coffee sweet."
Naomi: コーヒーを甘くした、というと「わざとコーヒーを甘くした」という感じですね。多分、ゆういちさんは、砂糖を入れて、コーヒーを甘くしたんでしょうね。
Jessi: Right, so here Yuichi intentionally made the coffee sweet, perhaps by adding some sugar or something. Can we hear one more example?
Naomi: 部屋を暖かくした。
Jessi: “I made the room warm.”
Yuichi: 「暖かくする」というと、「なおみさんが、ヒーターのスイッチを入れて、わざと部屋を暖かくした」という意味ですよね。
Jessi: Right. So as you can see, する refers to an action where someone makes some kind of change, and it puts emphasis on the one performing the action.
Naomi: では次に、「形容詞」plus 「なる」を勉強しましょう。
Jessi: Now let's look at the usage of adjectives plus なる. Sample sentence please?
Yuichi: コーヒーが甘くなった。
Jessi: “The coffee became sweet.”
Naomi: 誰が砂糖を入れて甘くしたとかは、全然関係ないんですね。コーヒーの味が甘くなったっていう、その変化だけ、変わったことだけを言っています。
Jessi: Right. This sentence doesn't mention who made the coffee sweet, it just states the fact that it became sweet. It sounds like the change happens naturally.
Yuichi: じゃ、さっき「なおみさんは部屋を暖かくしました」よね。じゃ、部屋はどうなりましたか?
Jessi: So let's go back to the example sentence we just looked at - "Naomi made the room warm". Guess what happened to the room as a result. It got warm, right? In that case you say...
Naomi: 部屋が暖かくなった。
Jess: "The room got warm" or "The room warmed up".
Yuichi: じゃ、復習をしましょうか。
Jessi: OK. Let's recap with some practice questions. So listeners, how would you say "My computer got old."
Here's a hint. Your computer naturally gets old, right? Which word would you use?
[pause]
And the answer is?
Yuichi:
Naomi: あ、もう古くなっちゃったんですか?
Jessi: そうですね、はい。So I want to get a new digital camera.

Outro

Jessi: All right, Well, that's all for this lesson.
Naomi: じゃあまた。
Yuichi: さようなら。
Jessi: See you next time.
