(Bell)
Teacher: Have you ever heard of the word Karoushi? You might have seen it on TV or in the newspapers. Today, we are going to talk about this Karoushi together. So, make groups and have a discussions about the current situation and social background of Karoushi for 30 minutes by using textbooks and the Internet.

Hiroshi: Well, first of all, what's the definition of Karoushi?
Misa: It's on the textbook. It says that Karoushi is death by fatigue, stress, or other detrimental side effects of working overtime and working without days off which results in brain, heart, and/or respiratory disease. Also, it includes suicide triggered by depression due to overwork and stress, which is called Karou-jisatsu.
Gonbei: I see. It just occurred to me that I've heard this word is comprehensible in English.
Hiroshi: Hang on...(click-clack) hmmm.
It says that in 2002, the word appeared for the first time in English dictionaries which brought Karoushi to international recognition as symbolism of Japanese lifestyle.
Misa: I think many people from foreign countries can't understand working so hard until to die..
Gonbei: But my dad told me that his business partners in America work till midnight or sometimes until morning everyday. I don't think not only Japanese do the prolonged work.

Yasumi: I finally found my way, but what an adventure that was.
Hajime: Yo, Yasumi! You finally made it. What took you so long?
Yasumi: The directions you gave me... were very confusing, but I made it. Come to think of it, you said something about pizza, didn't you?
Hajime: Yeah, a pizza made my girlfriend.
Yasumi: Really! I love pizza, you know.
Hajime: If you had arrived earlier, you could have eaten it. Sorry, we ate it all.
Yasumi: What!? Unbelievable! I went all the trouble to come here... oh, never mind. At least, I know the shortcut home.

Translation:
Kumi: We haven't been moving at all.
Kenji: Yeah, today's the last day of Golden Week.
Kumi: Oh, boy. We should have left the inn earlier, shouldn't we?
Kenji: Who was it putting on make-up for 2 hours?
Kumi: What? Who could it have been... Oh, Let's listen to the traffic report.

(turn on radio)
(turns up the volume)
Voice from radio: Today, as it's the last day of Golden Week, the U-turn Rush has reached its peak and causing traffic jams one ofter the other in many parts of the country. Currently, there is an intermittent 44 kilometer backup on the Tokyo-bound Chuo Expressway starting at Otsuki Interchange. Also, on the Chuo Expressway leaving Tokyo, there's a one-side lane closure due to an overturned truck which occurred near Sagami lake. Please drive with caution when you pass the area. The accident is also causing an 8 kilometer traffic jam starting from near Hachioji Interchange. Fender benders tend to occur in the middle or the rear of traffic jams, so maintain a safe following distance.... (turns down the volume)

Kenji: 44 kilometer traffic jam on the Tokyo-bound Chuo Expressway? No way! Unbelievable!
Kumi: Ken-chan, I think I need to go to the little girl's room.
Kenji: OK, for now, why don't we get off at the next rest stop and grab something to eat?
