Announcer: Today I'd like to hear from Professor Saga from Tozai University's Law Department on the subject of the citizen judge system that began in May 2009.
Professor Saga: It's my pleasure.
Announcer: So, Professor Saga, could you please explain in simple terms about the citizen judge system?
Professor Saga: Yes. First of all, citizen judges are chosen at random from citizens over the age of twenty.
:The citizen judges, together with the judge, preside over a criminal trial and decide whether or not the defendant is innocent or guilty.
:If the defendant is found guilty, then they decide on the form of punishment. That's the system.
Announcer: So what you're saying is that any one of us could become a citizen judge, isn't it?
Professor Saga: Yes. However, Diet members and those involved with the dispensation of justice and such cannot become citizen judges.
:Basically, there is significance in the fact that ordinary people with no knowledge of the law are participating in the trials.
Announcer: Which means?
Professor Saga: In the past, it took an extremely long time for trials to come to the sentencing.
:Furthermore, there were also parts that were difficult for the average citizen to understand.
:Accordingly, the objective of the citizen judge system is to encourage easy to understand, speedy trials that reflect the general opinions of the people.
Announcer: I see. So we're aiming for a courtroom that the average citizen can easily understand.

Hello everyone, nice to meet you. My name is Takamura.
I'm in event planning and management.

Unfortunately it's closed at the present time, but about four years ago I opened a gallery-cafe called MOGRA in Harajuku. There I created many different events with the fun people who congregated there.

In this blog, I hope to be able to introduce the events I've done up till now, with an emphasis on the stories of the artists who gathered at that gallery-cafe as a focal point.

Tokyo is a unique city in which so many people with a great variety of expectations live. Since so much activity is happening at once, it's a special city that is changing everyday with tremendous speed and energy.

The stories I'm going to introduce may be trivial in such a city, but they may also be wonderful incidents connected to somebody somewhere.

Long, long ago, in a small fishing village, lived a kind-hearted man called Urashimataro. One day, when he was walking on the beach, upon seeing some children hitting and kicking a poor turtle, he said,
"You shouldn't pick on weak things, should you? I'll give you this fish, now let that turtle go."
The turtle thanked Taro.
"Thanks to you, I'm saved. As a token of my gratitude, I shall show you to the Palace of the Sea Godess, Otohime, in the ocean."
Taro got on the turtle's back and they headed towards the palace of the Sea Goddess.
"Mr. Urashima, that is the palace of the Sea Goddess."
"Wow, what a splendid palace. It's amazing that there's such a palace in the middle of the ocean."
Taro was astonished at the beauty and bigness of that palace. At the palace, a beautiful princess came out to meet
Taro.
"Mr. Urashima, thank you for helping the turtle today. Please go and make yourself comfortable."
The princess welcomed Taro with a fabulous banquet. Taro was thrilled with the delicous meal! After the meal, the creatures of the sea welcomed him by singing and dancing.
And like this, Taro spent many happy days. And each day passed like it was a dream.
But one day, he remembered his house, and suddenly became homesick. He said,
"Thanks to you, I was able to spend many fun days. But, now I have to go home. Because my old parents will worry."
"Is that so? That's regrettable. Well, I shall give you this box as a souvenir."
And with that, Princess Otohime passed Taro a beautiful box.
"Just holding this, you will become happy. This box is called tamate box. But no matter what happens, you can never open the lid."
Taro took the box, said his thank yous, and parted with Princess Otohime. He got on the turtle's back and returned to the original beach. But the appearance of the beach had changed completely. There he wasn't able to see the tree that was supposed to be there, the building that was supposed to be there, and even his own house didn't exist. Everybody passing him were complete strangers. Now, a worried Taro asked a passing old man, "Isn't there the house of Urashima Taro in this area?"
With that, the old man said this:
"Ah, a long time ago, I heard there was such a house. Well, there is a story that the young boy who lived there got on the back of a turtle, went out to sea, and never returned."
"I thought it was just a few days, but decades have passed."
Taro was completely surprised. Then he forgot the promise he made to Princess Otohime and he opened the lid to the tamate box. And then, from the box, white smoke floated up. Taro became an old man.
The end.
