Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! While you’re in the Japanese bar, you lean over to your friend and say in Japanese, “I’m getting tired. It’s been a long day. How much longer do you want to stay out tonight?” Your friend responds in Japanese, “Maybe another hour…till eleven o’clock?” You nod in assent and tell your friend, “That sounds good because I have to get up early for class tomorrow morning.” You go back to enjoying your Japanese sake. At eleven o’clock, you gesture to your friend, who is engrossed in conversation with the Japanese bartender. She pretends not to notice, so you hold up your arm, point to your watch, and mouth the Japanese words “It’s time to go!” She shakes her head and mouths “no” back to you in Japanese, then turns her attention back to the bartender. You can’t leave your friend behind, so you settle in to the bar and check out the Japanese baseball game on the television. It’s the eighth inning now, and the Japanese team is winning by five runs. You’ll give her one more inning, and if she hasn’t struck out with the Japanese bartender by the time the game’s over, you’re outta there!

Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! Your friend asks you in Japanese, “Did you hear the latest gossip?” You reply in Japanese, “I’m sure you have something hotter off the presses than I do. I’ve had my head in the books all weekend.” Your friend says in Japanese, “Well, then, you’re not going to believe what I just heard.” You answer in Japanese, “You’re probably right… You tell me stuff all the time that you heard from someone who heard it from someone else, and inevitably it turns out not to be accurate.” Your friend responds in Japanese, “Well, that might be true sometimes, but this time, I think I’ve heard information from a reliable source. And it’s information you’ve been waiting to hear for a long time.” You inquire in Japanese, “Okay, I give in. What did you hear?” Your friend explains in Japanese, “You know that person you’ve had a crush on for a long time? Guess who’s single?” You tell your friend in Japanese, “They’ve been dating each other forever. Can that really be true?” Your friend exclaims in Japanese, “Now’s your chance!”

Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! Some angry Japanese ninjas are chasing you through the streets of Japan. The ninjas are wearing all black with a Japanese flag emblazoned on their shirts. While the Japanese men look fierce, for some reason, you’re wearing your pink terrycloth night robe and fuzzy bunny slippers. Just as the ninjas are about to grab you, you wake up safe and sound in your Japanese hotel room. Pinching yourself to make sure you’re awake, you look at the alarm clock and realize you’re going to be late for your work appointment with your Japanese clients. That wouldn’t be so terrible, but you were already late earlier this week to meet the representatives of this very important Japanese account. In a panic, you call your office and tell your assistant in Japanese, “Hey, I’m running a few minutes late again today. I’ll be in there as soon as I can, but you’ll need to stall.” He asks you in Japanese, “Okay, boss, but what do you want me to say?” You instruct him in Japanese, “Tell them I wasn’t feeling well and had to stop by the doctor’s office on my way in, but that they are so important I wanted to come in anyway.” He replies in Japanese, “Okay, but what if they ask what it is you have?” You respond in Japanese, “Don’t tell them it’s anything contagious…just say it’s a “personal” issue, and that should take care of it. People don’t like to probe when you say that.” Your assistant says in Japanese, “I’m on it. Now get off the phone and get in here!”

Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! When your roommate gets home from work in Japan, she calls out in Japanese, “Hey, buddy, are you home?” From the couch in front of your video games, you reply in Japanese, “Mmmm, barely. I’m pretty tired.” As chipper as ever, she says in Japanese, “You know, it’s your week to take out the trash and recycling. Today is the day. Are you going to take care of it?” You respond in Japanese, “Yes, I’ll get to it, but right now I’m busy.” She comes over to the couch, inspects the pile of junk food around you, and notices that you are playing a Japanese video game. She tells you in Japanese, “You can shoot the aliens later. Right now, you need to take out the trash!” You reply in Japanese, “Gee, I didn’t know I had another mom…” Seeing the glare on her face, you wonder whether you’ve taken it too far. You say in Japanese, “I didn’t mean to be snappish; I’m just cranky because I’m so tired.” But it’s too late…your roommate has already stomped off and slammed the door to her room, muttering “Excuses, excuses!” in Japanese.
