Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! You ask your hairstylist in Japanese, “What was that? I couldn’t hear you over the noise of the hairdryer.” Your stylist replies in Japanese, “I heard that your friends were getting a divorce.” You respond in Japanese, “You did? I think I would have known about that by now. Where did you hear that?” Your stylist replies in Japanese, “I heard another stylist’s client talking about the divorce the other day. Sounds pretty nasty.” You remark in Japanese, “Well, it’s possible that my friends didn’t tell me, but I think it’s unlikely that I wouldn’t know. I’m pretty close to them. Maybe the stylist and client were talking about someone else.” Your stylist responds in Japanese, “No, I don’t think so. I know what I heard!” You think to yourself in Japanese, “Yeah, right. I can barely hear you with all the noise, and I’m less than a foot away from you! This has to be a mistake!”

Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! You tell your friend in Japanese, “You’re good at predicting things, right?” Your friend responds in Japanese, “What do you mean?” You explain in Japanese, “You appear to always give smart advice because you can see in advance what might happen.” Your friend replies in Japanese, “Well, I suppose I am pretty practical, but I don’t have a crystal ball that allows me to see the future, if that’s what you mean.” You say to your friend in Japanese, “Well, I have a situation that I could use your advice about. I have a job offer, but I’m not happy with the money the employer offered, and I want to know whether to ask for a bigger salary.” Your friend asks in Japanese, “How am I supposed to know the answer to that question?” You respond in Japanese, “Because it’s the job you used to have with your old company!”

Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! You know it’s a trend, and a growing one, when the newscasters spend time in their segments talking about it or interviewing people about it. In this case, it’s a phenomenon sweeping Japanese office workers; instead of buying coffee, soda, or tea at the office or on the way, they’re bringing their own drinks to work. This is a considerable change to the mores of Japanese office workers, and changes to the established custom never come easily or without some friction. Would you do something radically different from the rest of your friends and colleagues in the office or classroom? Or would you wait until a large proportion of those around you were changing their habits? Your friends all tell you they’re bringing their own drinks to work to save money; after all, it’s much cheaper to bring your own home-brewed coffee or tea than it is to buy it. Not to mention that you will probably make much better coffee at home at a much more reasonable price, especially if you’re a regular of those fancy coffee houses. Will you be the next Japanese trendsetter?

Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! Do you work in an office? Many people do. Do you eat lunch? Silly question; of course you eat lunch. Where? How do you get your food at lunch time? Do you go to a restaurant? That can take more time than you have for lunch, and you can’t be late returning. How about a fast food place? Quick, but often times the fast food is almost as expensive as a restaurant. In Japan, a new trend is growing among office workers. Many office workers are now bringing their own lunch from home. In the US, we’d say they were “brown-bagging.” In Japanese, they’re “bento-men,” that is, men who bring bento from home for lunch. Don’t think bento means just a sandwich and fruit in a box. Not at all; bento is an art. The food is supposed to be as good to the eye as to the tongue. Good bento starts your mouth to watering as soon as you see it. Japanese admire those who have mastered the art of bento. Best of all, bento saves lots of money. You can eat really well and cheaply if you to become a “bento man.”
Learning Japanese with JapanesePod101.com is the most fun and effective way to learn Japanese! This Japanese Lower Intermediate lesson discusses the grammar of conjecture. You know about conjecture. You’re not sure about something, but you think it’s so, so you say, “It looks like…” Or, you might say, “Apparently…” You see things or hear things that appear to be true, but you’re not one-hundred percent sure. It’s the same idea in Japanese, but you must construct the words properly. You’ll be conjecturing right and left in Japanese at the end of this Lower Intermediate lesson.
