Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! It’s not clear to you why, but you seem to have little difficulty reading the hiragana and kanji you see every day in Japan. However, listening to Japanese has proven to be quite a challenge. For some reason, listening to the Japanese language is more difficult than reading it. You notice that’s different for you than for your other friends who came to Japan with you. But now, you’ve got to get better at listening to your Japanese lessons. You’re scheduled to take the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) in a few weeks, and you’ve learned that a part of the test is answering Japanese questions based solely on what you’ve heard. Your Japanese friends all tell you that you’ll do really well because you answer all their Japanese questions and participate in Japanese conversations with them just fine. But it’s just not the same as taking a listening test in Japanese. “What am I going to do about the test?” you complain to your friend in Japanese. “Don’t worry so much. You’ll do fine,” she answers in Japanese. “You understand me now, don’t you? And I’m speaking Japanese.” Frustrated, you reply in Japanese, “Yes, but it’s so much different talking to you than taking a test.” “How is it different?” she questions. And you can’t seem to say how it’s different…you just know it is. Maybe you will do well, after all, you have practiced Japanese for what seems like forever!
