Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! “Why are you telling me to “shush?” you ask your friend in Japanese? “I’m just observing what’s going on. Why do I have to be quiet? What’s going on here?” Your friend has been shushing you ever since you started counting the waiters in Japanese in the little ramen shop where you’ve come to eat. It just does not make much sense. You can see only a very few tables and chairs, but lots of waiters. Why would a ramen shop have more waiters than chairs for customers? And your friend just keeps repeating, “shush” to make you keep still. You couldn’t have counted wrong. You know how to count in Japanese very well. Maybe the words you used to count weren’t right in Japanese. Maybe your friend was trying to save you the embarrassment of using the wrong Japanese counting words. Yeah, that must be it. How embarrassing!

Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! “How many people in your party, Ma’am?” the hostess asks as you enter the Japanese restaurant. Seating you at your table, she asks in Japanese, “Are you ready to order your drinks?” You politely ask the hostess in Japanese, “Please bring us three waters and one tea for right now…we’re not sure.” The server approaches your table and asks in Japanese, “Will you all need glasses for wine, and how many would that be?” He counts the people around the table in Japanese, “You have five people?” Since there are only four people at your table, they must know your boss will be coming in soon - and they know he’s really a big shot. Sure enough, your boss arrives and moments later, another server approaches and explains in Japanese, “I have two vegetable ramen and three onigiri.” They seem to know his usual as they place one plate in front of him along with one glass of white wine. It’s a good thing you have been studying your Japanese so you didn’t embarrass yourself in front of the staff…not to mention your boss!

Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! Sticker shock. It happens to many people who travel to Japan because the Japanese currency is so much different from dollars. One Japanese yen is only a little bit more than one penny (about eight per cent more). So the numbers look really, really big in Japan. Your tube of toothpaste that cost you $3 in the United States will be 325 yen in Japan. It takes a while to get used to the really big Japanese numbers. You know that $100,000 Ferrari you’ve been eyeballing? In Japan, it is 10,250,000 yen!! But you can adjust. Keep repeating to yourself, “Divide by 100, divide by 100.” Now about that umbrella you bought for $294…
