Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! As you walk into the convenience store down the block, a nice person holds the door for you and tells you in Japanese, “Happy Friday! On your way out, could you consider helping out a Japanese student?” He rattles a few coins in a can and continues in Japanese, “Thanks, I appreciate it. See you in a few minutes.” You nod and walk into the store, but you observe the way this person interacts with others. Many customers seem to know this person and even greet him by name in Japanese. You see him collecting many Japanese coins just in the short time you are here. On your way out, he tells you in Japanese, “Hope you have a nice day” and holds his can of coins for you to drop your spare change into. As you do, you ask him in Japanese, “How much money do you make per day?” He responds in Japanese, “There is not much in my can at the end of the day, but there is enough to want to stand here all day and do it.” You think to yourself in Japanese, “How can have classes to take if he’s standing here all day long? Is he a scam artist?”

Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! How could you lose your wallet? You could swear it was in your pocket just a few moments ago. But when you reached into your pocket to pay for dinner, you realized frighteningly that there’s nothing there. You ask your girlfriend in Japanese, “What happened to my wallet?” She looks at you, dumbstruck and asks in Japanese, “How would I know where your wallet is?” Panicked, you reply in Japanese, “I think I lost my wallet!!” She asks in Japanese, “Is it in your bag?” Remembering your bag, you frantically grab it from the backseat and tear it open searching for the missing wallet with no success. Of course it’s not there though, why would you have put it back in your bag after you stopped for gas? Things are just not making sense… The helpful waitress alerts a policeman to help you report your missing wallet. But as you begin to describe the missing wallet in Japanese, the policeman tells you in Japanese, “We need your name, telephone number, and add…” The policeman is suddenly cut off by a screeching sound! What is that noise?!

Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! Some questions really startle a person. You can’t quite believe them. Sometimes, people ask questions so peculiar that you just don’t know what to do. It was an innocent discussion of cars: what you like, what you don’t like. Then out of the blue, your friend asks in Japanese, “Is a Lamborghini a type of Suzuki” How could anyone mix up Japanese sedans with the hottest Italian sports car on the planet? She’s your friend, and she’s really cute, so you can’t really break out laughing; that would be insulting. What do you say to a question like that? Maybe you misunderstood her…you don’t speak Japanese very fluently – yes, that must be it! Probably the best thing to do is to just try to keep a straight face and ask her in Japanese, “Do you like Italian sports cars…such as the Lamborghini? They are a lot sportier than Suzukis.” Giggling, she answers in Japanese, “Oh, my mistake. Yes, I like Lamborghinis a lot!” Well, it doesn’t really matter what she knows or doesn’t know; she’s a great singer, a good friend, and don’t forget, really cute and likeable.

Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! “Why are you telling me to “shush?” you ask your friend in Japanese? “I’m just observing what’s going on. Why do I have to be quiet? What’s going on here?” Your friend has been shushing you ever since you started counting the waiters in Japanese in the little ramen shop where you’ve come to eat. It just does not make much sense. You can see only a very few tables and chairs, but lots of waiters. Why would a ramen shop have more waiters than chairs for customers? And your friend just keeps repeating, “shush” to make you keep still. You couldn’t have counted wrong. You know how to count in Japanese very well. Maybe the words you used to count weren’t right in Japanese. Maybe your friend was trying to save you the embarrassment of using the wrong Japanese counting words. Yeah, that must be it. How embarrassing!
