Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! Your friends say they are going to introduce you to one of the great Japanese cultural events. But they won’t tell you where you’re going until you get there. You trust your Japanese friends, so you know it won’t be awful. But still, you’re getting a little nervous. What if they’ve arranged for a trip to a traditional Japanese bathhouse. You don’t think you could do that. However, as you get off the train, you see lots of people streaming into a building, so it looks to be okay. There couldn’t be that many people taking a bath all at once. Your friends hand you a ticket and announce you’re going to see a Japanese sumo wrestling match. “No way,” you exclaim in Japanese. At least you had the presence to say it in Japanese. “Yes,” they tell you in Japanese, “You’ll love it.” After you get to your seat, you see two enormous Japanese men staring at one another and you notice a small ring between them. You think the ring can’t be big enough to hold the two of them at once, much less allow them to wrestle. The gigantic Japanese men stretch and limber up. They each toss something—you know not what—over a shoulder and start to place themselves in the ring. The official checks each man. The two fighters tense and grimace. The official suddenly signals the start of the match. The giants catapult themselves at each other on thighs thicker than telephone poles. And it’s over in less than three seconds. “Wow, amazing!” you say in Japanese! But your friends stare in amazement at you because you have gotten the Japanese phrases correct all night!

Fuji is the most revered mountain in Japan.” As you look out the window, she continues in Japanese, “It’s an active volcano, though it hasn’t erupted in a few hundred years. The Japanese love this mountain so much that they teach all Japanese children a song about it in the third grade. Do you want to learn that song?” As you scream out in your head in Japanese, “No!” you hear a chorus of “Yes” in Japanese around you. As the tour leader starts singing in Japanese, you look at your travel companion, roll your eyes, and say in Japanese, “Now this song is going to be stuck in my head the rest of our trip.” Your companion looks at you, smiles, and starts singing the song to you in Japanese!

Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! “Are you cold?” your friend asks? “No,” you answer in Japanese, “I’m not cold; I’m just fine.” Now you’ve just hit on a universal topic of discussion in Japan and everywhere else in the world - the weather. On your trip to Japan, you’ll want to be able to talk about the weather in Japanese. It’s one of the best ways to start conversations with almost anyone, young, old, and in between. However, I don’t recommend starting conversations with strangers by telling them you HAVE a cold, so make sure you know how to form these Japanese sentences correctly. Otherwise, you’re not likely to make people in Japan – or anywhere else – want to get too close to you!

Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! Your friend asks in Japanese, “How are we going to get through our new class? That teacher seems really tough. What do you think of her?” Your Japanese answer hides your real thoughts, “I don’t know; it shouldn’t be too difficult. I think our teacher really wants us to succeed, and if she wants us to succeed, she’ll do what’s necessary to help us learn. She really knows all about the material and the subject. She has an advanced degree. Her previous classes really like her. Sure, she looks like she’ll be harsh, but I’m sure she has our best interests at heart. She’s available after hours for extra work if you need it. Some of the exercises she uses in the classroom she devised herself and they have won awards for innovation in education. Her Japanese is perfect, so there’s no problem understanding what she’s saying. She has even arranged special field trips so we can see how the things she teaches are applied out in the world. I think her class will be really good.” Your friend looks at you with suspicion and asks in Japanese, “Say, how do you know so much about this teacher? She’s new this year. How can you know all that stuff about her and her teaching methods?” Quietly, you reply in Japanese, “Because she’s my Mom.”
