Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! Some people like to go to the airport to watch the planes fly. They are a magnificent sight. But you like something different. You like the Japanese Bullet train. Your friends ask in Japanese, “Where are you going to? Are you going out to the airport with us to see the big planes come in?” You answer in Japanese, “Nope, I’m headed into town to the train station. The Japanese Bullet trains are coming in and headed out. I want to watch them as they pick up speed.” To your Japanese friends, the Bullet train is old news. But to you, the thought of a train going almost two-hundred miles an hour is incredible. Your friends ask in Japanese, “Why don’t you come with us to the airport? You can go to the train station to see the Bullet train any time, but to go to the airport and see the new Japanese planes from both Boeing and Airbus at the same time is rare.” Nah…you know where you are headed.

Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! At most film screenings in Japan and elsewhere, the attraction is the film…not the scenery in the theater. In fact, most movie theaters are deliberately plainly decorated so as not to interrupt the moviegoing experience for all viewers, including the Japanese. Besides, all Japanese movie theaters are dark for most of the time you’re in them, so your surroundings don’t show. However, one Japanese director recently decided to break new ground with his movie project. In a showing of his film in Japan, he added some innovative surroundings that were the talk of the viewers of his Japanese film. This backdrop for his Japanese project was like no other!

Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! Your friend asks in Japanese, “What are you studying?” You answer in Japanese, “I’m studying this information from my new company. They have a good plan for employees. Everyone who works for the company can buy company stock at a discount. What do you think I should do?” Your Japanese friend ponders and you can see conflicting emotions cross his face as he answers in Japanese, “Well, I don’t know, sometimes that has worked out really well. My friend made a lot of money with the company employee-stock purchase plan, but for a couple of my other friends it wasn’t so good. The company kept losing money and the stock kept going down so they lost money. I don’t know if it makes a difference whether it’s a Japanese company or not. What sort of a deal do you get?” You look at the papers and answer him in Japanese, “Well, the money is deducted directly from the paycheck, and we get the stock at fifteen percent off the stock exchange price at the beginning of the month.” Nodding in approval, your friend answers, “Wow, that’s a great deal. If the stock just holds even for the month, you can make fifteen percent on your money. You should do this.” Your friend tends to speak Japanese too rapidly for you when he’s excited. “Could you repeat that? A bit more slowly?”
