Jessi: This conversation takes place at an office.
Yuichi: テレビレポーターが、おすし屋さんにインタビューしています。
Jessi: The conversation is between a TV reporter and a sushi chef. The speakers will be speaking formal Japanese.
Naomi: 今日の文法のポイントは何でしょうか?
Yuichi: Noun modification Part 2です。
Jessi: In this lesson you will learn about another type of noun modification, as in
Yuichi: 社長が辞めるという噂
Jessi: “The rumor that the president will resign”

DIALOGUE
Yuichi: 今度は英語が入ります。
レポーター:こんにちは、みなさん。会社で回転寿司を食べられるという噂を聞いたのですが、本当なのでしょうか。
Jessi: Hello, everyone! I've heard rumors that say that you can eat conveyor-belt sushi at the office - but is it really true?
レポーター:今日は、ここの会社に回転寿司が来ていると聞いたのですが。
Jessi: I've heard that today, they have conveyor-belt sushi at this very office.
(コンコン)失礼します。
(Knock knock) Excuse me.
社員たち:こんにちは。
Jessi: Hello!
レポーター:すごい!!オフィスの中で、お寿司が回っています!
Jessi: Wow! There is sushi making its way around the office!
板前:らっしゃい!ようこそ、出張回転寿司へ!
Jessi: Welcome to the traveling conveyor-belt sushi shop!
レポーター:出張回転寿司?
Jessi: Traveling conveyor-belt sushi shop?
レポーター:この機械は、持ってきたんですか。
Jessi: You mean, you brought this device here?
板前:そうだよ。基本料金は2万。
Jessi: That's right. The basic fee is twenty thousand yen.
板前:それに食べた分の料金を加算するシステムだよ。
Jessi: It's a system where the fee for what's eaten is added on.
板前:そして、なんと、お寿司1皿は、普通の回転寿司とは、変わらない値段!
Jessi: And, what's more, the price of one plate of sushi doesn't change from that of regular conveyor belt sushi.
レポーター:なるほどー。
Jessi: I see!
レポーター:機械をセットアップする代金と、板前さんに来てもらう代金が2万円。
Jessi: So it's a charge of twenty thousand yen to have the device set up and to have you come.
レポーター:あとは、お寿司を食べた料金を払えば良いんですね。
Jessi: After that, you just pay for the sushi that you eat, right?
レポーター:それは、お手ごろですね!
Jessi: That's quite reasonable!
板前:だろ?
Jessi: Isn't it?
レポーター:どうして、出張回転寿司を始めたんですか?
Jessi: Why did you decide to start this traveling conveyor-belt sushi service?
板前:自宅や会社で回転寿司を楽しみたいという意見があってね。
Jessi: A lot of people said they wanted to enjoy conveyor-belt sushi at home and work.
レポーター:すばらしいですね!
Jessi: That's wonderful!
レポーター:会社やイベントだけでなく、人がたくさん集まるホームパーティーなどでも、お勧めですね!
Jessi: I'd recommend it not only for the office and events, but also things like home parties where a lot of people gather as well!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: この出張回転寿司って、本当にあるんです?
Yuichi: はい、本当にありますよ。
Naomi: へー、面白いですね。普通のおすし屋さんの出前とかなら知ってましたけどね。
Yuichi: あー、はい。この出張回転寿司を、僕たちの Innovative Language Learning のオフィスに呼んでみたらどうでしょう?
Jessi: う〜ん、面白そうですね。
Naomi: うん、いいかもしれないですね。高くないし!
Jessi: そうですよね。
Naomi: 私ね、でもこれ思ったんですけど、この出張回転寿司。あの、老人ホームとかに行ったら、結構おじいちゃんとかおばあちゃんとか、喜ぶんじゃないかなと思うんですけど。
Yuichi: あ〜、そうですね。
Jessi: あ〜、いいですね。
Yuichi: はい、多分自分で回転寿司に行けないおじいちゃんおばあちゃんは、本当に喜ぶと思いますね。
Naomi: 楽しいですもんね、回ってくるのね。
Jessi: あー、そうですね。
Yuichi: はい。あと、ダイアログでも言っていたんですけども、値段も安いみたいなので、とてもいいですよね。リスナーのみなさんは、出張回転寿司を呼んでみたいですか?コメントよろしくお願いします。

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Yuichi: 最初の単語は、回る
Jessi: to go around
Yuichi: ダイアログでは「おすしが回る」(The sushi goes around) というように使われていました。
Naomi: 「Such and such が回る」と言いますね。Particle は「が」です。「~が回る」。例えば、「目が回る」。
Jessi: 目が回る literally means "ones eyes go around" or "ones eyes spin" but it means "to feel dizzy" or "my head spins."
「回る」と「回す」は、難しいですね。
Naomi: あ、他動詞と自動詞ね。「回る」「回す」。
Jessi: Right. In grammar terms - transitive and intransitive verbs. For example, to talk about the action of spinning a top, you can say
Yuichi: こまを回す
Jessi: And you would use 回す. To simply talk about of spinning, you can say
Naomi: こまが回っている
Yuichi: 次の単語は
Naomi: 出張
Jessi: service call
Yuichi: この「出張」は、みなさんが知っている「出張」の意味とは違うかもしれないですね。
Jessi: あー、そうですね。The first thing that comes to your mind when you hear this word might be "business trip", as in
Yuichi: 出張で、大阪に行った。
Jessi: “I went to Osaka on a business trip.”
Yuichi: ダイアログで使われていたのは、「お客さんの所に仕事をしに行くこと」という意味でしたね。
Naomi: そうですね。では、次の単語は何でしょう?
Yuichi: 基本料金
Jessi: basic charge
Yuichi: 便利な単語が入っているので、breakdownしましょう。
Naomi: 基本
Jessi: basic
Naomi: 料金
Jessi: charge
Naomi: ついでに、「料金」を使った他の単語も覚えてしまいましょう。
何かを使ったときのお金は?
Yuichi: 使用料金
Jessi: 使用 is "use" so 使用料金 is "usage fee", or "the money you pay when you use something."
Yuichi:「使用」の代わりに「利用」を使って、「利用料金」"usage fee" と言ってもいいです。
Naomi: そうですね。意味はだいたい同じですよね。じゃ、電話で話すことを「通話」と言います。ですから、
Yuichi: 通話料金
Jessi: 通話 is "phone call." So 通話料金 is "the charge for a phone call."
Naomi: この「料金」を使った単語、ぜひ覚えてくださいね。

Lesson focus

Jessi: In this lesson, we're going to learn another type of noun modification, which corresponds to "(the fact) that~."
Please note that modifying clauses always come before the noun, which is different from English.
Naomi: このレッスンでは特に「~という+名詞」を勉強しましょう。
Jessi: Right. In this lesson we'll focus on the pattern [ ---という Noun].
Sample sentence, please.
Yuichi: 星野さんが結婚するという噂を聞いた。
Jessi: "I heard the rumor that Mr. Hoshino was getting married."
Naomi: 噂(rumor)、意見(opinion)、考え(thought)とかの前には「という」が入ります。
Jessi: So for the nouns that are related to thoughts, ideas, or things people say, you have to place という after the modifying clause.
例文お願いします。
Yuichi: 高校生もアルバイトをしたほうがいいという意見。
Jessi: “The opinion that high school students should work part time.”
Naomi: 私の両親は学生は勉強だけをするべきだという考えを持っていた。
Jessi: “My parents had the belief that students should focus on studying.”
Naomi: 反対に「という」を入れてはいけない、という場合もありますよね。
Yuichi: 例えば、におい(smell)、味(taste) の前には「という」は使えません。
Jessi: Right, for nouns related to sensation or perception, you cannot put という.
例文お願いします。
Yuichi: 卵が腐ったにおい。
Jessi: “the smell of rotten eggs”
Naomi: 名詞 nounの前に「という」を入れても、入れなくても、どちらでもいい場合がほとんどなんですよね。ただ、入れなくてはいけないのは、noun が考えや発言に関係する場合。
Yuichi: 入れてはいけないのは、noun が味、におい、音、痛みなどに関係する場合です。
Jessi: So という after modifying clauses is basically optional, but in some cases it is obligatory or not allowed. When the nouns are related to thoughts or things people say, you need to put という before the noun. On the other hand, nouns that are related to sensation or perception cannot have という before them. So please take note of that.
OK. So now, let's recap this lesson with a quiz. How do you say "I heard the rumor that Naomi-sensei is going to Hawaii."
[pause]
And the answer is?
Yuichi: なおみ先生がハワイに行くという噂を聞いた。いいですね~、なおみさん。
Naomi: 噂ですからね。本当ではないです。でも、沖縄には行くんです。
Jessi: あ〜、いいですね。じゃ、暖かいところに行くというのは、正しかったんですね。
Well, it's about time to wrap up this lesson. Now, don't forget to stop by Japanesepod101.com. and pick up the lesson notes. Explanations about when and when not to use という are written in the PDF, so please check it out for more details.
