INTRODUCTION
Naomi: ナオミです。
Yuichi: ユウイチです。
Peter: Peter here. Say What You Really Mean in Japanese.
Naomi: 今日は、お歳暮のレッスンです。ピーターさん、お歳暮っていうのは Yearend gift. Does it make sense in English?
Peter: The English is okay and it’s just a Japanese concept. So umm 大丈夫です。
Naomi: では、ユウイチさん、今日のストーリーをお願いします。
Yuichi: 五味さんと星野さんの会話です。この二人は、同じ会社に勤めています。星野さんは五味さんの先輩です。
Naomi: そうですね。この五味さんと星野さんっていうのは、 Beginner series season 3 の Gomi San in Mangaland で出てきてますよね。
Yuichi: そうですね。
Peter: Today’s conversation is between two colleagues, Mr. Gomi and Mr. Hoshino. Now, if you are not familiar with their relationship, please check out our Beginner series season 3, Gomi San in Mangaland. They are 後輩、先輩。
Naomi: そうでうすね。
Yuichi: 星野さんは先輩なので Informal 、五味さんは formal な日本語を話しています。
Peter: Now, since Mr. Hoshino is the senior, he will be speaking informal Japanese while Mr. Gomi, the junior will be speaking formal Japanese.
Naomi: では、ダイアログを聞いて下さい。
DIALOGUE

GOMI: Hoshino! Long time, no see! Actually, I have to talk to you.
星野: あっ、五味。お前には、もう、だまされないぞ。
HOSHINO: Oh, Gomi. I won't be fooled by you again.
五味: えっ!何のことですか?
GOMI: Huh?! What are you talking about??
星野: 俺の部長は漫画が大嫌いなのに、漫画好きだって、俺をだましただろ。俺は、あれから部長ににらまれて大変だったんだぞ!
HOSHINO: You told me my boss loves manga when he actually hates it! You tricked me. Ever since then, he just glares at me.
五味: すいません。本気にすると思わなかったんです。本当にすいません。
GOMI: I'm sorry. I didn't think you'd actually do it. I'm really sorry.
星野: まぁ、いいだろ。水に流してやるよ。
HOSHINO: Ah, it's all right, I guess. I'll let it slide.
五味: ありがとうございます!ところで、先輩、そろそろお歳暮の季節ですね。やっぱり、上司にお歳暮を贈った方がいいでしょうか。
GOMI: Thank you! By the way, it's almost time for year-end presents, right? Do you think I should send one to my supervisor?
星野: そりゃそうだろ。
HOSHINO: Of course you should.
五味: 何が喜ばれると思いますか?
GOMI: What do you think he'd like?
星野: う~ん、それは、その人の性格とか好みによって違うよ。五味の部長は、坂口部長だよな。今度、会う機会があるから、ちょっと聞いてみようか。
HOSHINO: Hmm, that depends on his personality, on his preferences. Your supervisor is Mr. Sakaguchi right? I'm going to meet with him soon, shall I ask him?
五味: 助かります!よろしくお願いします!
GOMI: That would be great! Thank you!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Peter: ナオミ先生、お歳暮についてちょっと教えてください。
Naomi: はい。お歳暮というのは年の終わりに、お世話になった人にギフト、プレゼントを贈る習慣のことです。
Peter: So this is a custom to send a gift to someone who has looked after you for the year.
Naomi: そうです。これは、ハンドメイドとかじゃ絶対だめです。 handmade cookies とか, handmade cake とか、 handmade knit とか、そういうのは絶対だめです。 It has to be from shop.
Peter: デパートですね。
Naomi: うん。そうですね。
Peter: なるほど。ナオミ先生、大体何人物を贈っていますか?
Naomi: 私は贈らないです。普通会社とかに勤めて、私も会社に勤めていますけど、会社に勤めている人が、 Business partner とか、 boss とか上司とかに贈ります。
Peter: So you send it to business partners and bosses from companies you deal with.
Naomi: そうですね、そういう人が多いと思います。あとは親戚とかですかね。ピーターさんはお歳暮は贈らないんですか?
Peter: Ah そうですね、今年から? From this year?
Naomi: じゃあ、ユウイチさん、期待していてください。
Yuichi: そうですね、はい。
Peter: え、ユウイチに?ユウイチにも贈らなきゃいけないですか? I have to send something to Yuichi.
Yuichi: はい。楽しみにしています。
Peter: Let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. Naomi Sensei?
Naomi: The first word is 騙す
Peter: To trick, to cheat.
Naomi: The passive voice is 騙される
Peter: To be cheated.
Yuichi: ナオミさんは、よく騙されますか?
Naomi: 騙されません。
Peter: 騙されますね。騙されやすいですね。
Yuichi: ピーターさんはよく騙しますか。
Peter: ナオミ先生?はい。
Yuichi: ナオミ先生を騙すんですね。
Peter: そうですね。
Naomi: ユウイチさんもよく騙されますよね。
Yuichi: そうですね。ピーターさんに騙されますね。
Peter: そうですね。
Naomi: はい。じゃあ、
Peter: 幸せ。
Yuichi: え、いやいや。はい。 The next word is 睨まれる
Peter: To fall into disfavor with.
Yuichi: Active voice is 睨む
Peter: To squint, to stare. Now when someone says
Naomi: 睨まれる
Peter: It means to be out of favor or to be monitored as well. Kind of like someone is squinting at you.
Naomi: そうですね。嫌われているかもしれないですね。睨まれていれば。
Peter: 想像できません。例文をお願いします。
Yuichi: ジョンはよく女の子をいじめるので先生に睨まれている。
Peter: John often teases girls. So the teacher has got his eye on him.
Naomi: そうですね、ずっと見ている、 Watching him とか、 keep an eye on him という感じだと思います。次の単語は、本気にする
Peter: Take seriously.
Naomi: 本気は、 Serious という意味です。では、次です。
Yuichi: 水に流す
Peter: To forget everything, write it off.
Yuichi: 水は water 、で流す means to flush. で、水に流すというのは忘れるという意味ですね。
Peter: So it literally means to flow with water or to flush the water. Now originally it probably comes from a river and not flush. So to flow, flow past, let it go down, let it go by.
Naomi: そうですね。ユウイチさん、こないだは失礼なことを言ってすみません。
Peter: Yuichi, sorry about my inappropriate comment that I made the other day.
Yuichi: いいですよ、水に流しましょう。
Peter: Never mind. Let’s forget about it.
Naomi: リセットされましたね、良かったですね。
Yuichi: これもちょっと無理やりですね。
Peter: So yeah you kind of forced it on him.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Now on to today’s grammar point. In some cases, the passive sentences don’t have corresponding active sentences. Today’s grammar point focuses on such cases. Naomi Sensei, can you give us a sample sentence?
Naomi: 俺はあれから部長に睨まれて大変だったんだぞ。
Yuichi: Man! It’s been a tough situation since that because I felt a disfavor with the boss or the boss has kept a close eye on me since that. Kind of like every day watching his every move but what’s interesting here is the verb Naomi Sensei
Naomi: 睨まれる
Peter: And in the passive voice, it means to watch someone or to kind of stare at. This comes from the verb
Naomi: 睨む
Peter: Which means to stare at but here the passive kind of takes on a different meaning. What do we have for the passive again?
Naomi: 睨まれる
Peter: And this means to watch someone closely. To keep a very close eye on and usually with the expectation of catching them doing something. So this meaning in the passive, there is no equal in the active for example. The verb, one more time.
Naomi: 睨む
Peter: Stare. We could also have the passive.
Naomi: 睨まれる
Peter: To be stared at.
Naomi: But it also means to be monitored.

Outro

Peter: Yeah and that extra meaning, there is not the equivalent in the active. Now inside the PDF, there is an explanation about what we covered in the previous lesson, that nuance of being annoyed or troubled, the troubled passive which we highly recommend you check out because again mastering that is very, very important to understand the nuances of Japanese. Now also in the lesson notes the PDF. We also have Naomi Sensei…
Naomi: Conversation transcript.
Peter: Vocab, sample sentences and a grammar explanation.
Naomi: And a Cultural Insight section
Peter: Which we sometimes use
Naomi: Sometimes.
Peter: Sometimes. Okay and a lot of people, they actually read along while they listen. So doing that really helps you master the kanji in addition to understanding the full context of the transcript. All right, that’s going to do for today.
Naomi: じゃあまた。
Yuichi: さようなら。
