Hyper Japan event in London

Postby mmmason8967 » November 21st, 2012 12:22 am

Next weekend I'm going to visit the Hyper Japan event at Earls Court in London. I think it's going to be the highlight of my year :D

Is anyone else going to be going?

The show was smaller then I'd expected but nevertheless kept me occupied for about eight hours. Some the highlights for me were:-
  • Lots of people attended wearing cosplay outfits and an even larger number were wearing Tokyo street fashion outfits, especially Lolita and Fairy kei styles.
  • The food area smelled great and had stalls selling various kinds of street food. I had o-konomiyaki (お好み焼き) which comes from Osaka and is a kind of pancake based on shredded cabbage. とてもおいしい。
  • A panel discussion about anime with Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, one of the producers of Ghost in the Shell and the recent Letter to Momo.
  • A panel discussion about street fashion with the organisers of last year's Marble Collection show at Shibuya-AX in Tokyo.
  • A band called Tocoma performed what they call 「和ポップ」or "Wa-Pop", where 'wa' means Japanese tradition or spirit. Kimonos, shamisen, tuzumi, electric guitar and catchy tunes.
  • Kamui did a workshop on samurai swordsmanship that was very entertaining. Apparently Quentin Tarantino is a big fan, and Kamui were involved in the sword-fight scenes in Kill Bill.

エリックさん、マイケルさん、
Thank you very much!! :D
It sounds like the show was quite much focused on "modern" Japan, instead of traditional Japan.
If there were so many cosplay-outfitted people, probably it was even better in Camden Town?

It certainly seemed like it was a fun event. I should do some searching to see if anything like this takes place around my area. Thanks for sharing.

ウェズさん、
Hope you can find some interesting events!
It's not an event, but sometimes there're special offers on "ten'nou tanjoubi" (The Emperor's Birthday, 23rd December).
Someone told me before that phone companies offered free calls to Japan on that day (unfortunately, I got to know that
after the 23rd...). I don't remember which country it was....maybe UK.
It might be interesting to look for special offers relating to Japan or Japanese culture! :D

Free calls to Japan? That sounds awesome! Maybe I can call you all at JPod101 to say hello and all that jazz.

As for events around me, my search proved worthwhile. There was a festival back in September that paid tribute to Japanese culture. And it's not particularly related to Japan, but a neighboring city has a "はなみ" of its own in March. So, that's two festivals I'll be marking on my calendar for the new year. :)
