I experienced this myself, when I was talking to a Japanese friend and he used the word "おんち." At the time we were laughing about something so it made some kind of connection with this word. Now I feel like I will never forget "おんち" even though he only said it once!
You will learn things like using かんたん (easy) is more natural than using やさしい (easy). or that the sentence structure ともだちがにほんにいったのはいつ? is more natural then いつともだちがにほんにいったの?
Meanwhile, sometimes when I study by myself I forget words that I studied for a few weeks!

Thank you for helping your colleague!
To learn Japanese faster and better...practice, practice, practice!
Just like your colleagues wrote, practicing with Japanese people and flash cards are very efficient!
You can probably use sources like TV too?
