Postby Yizzo » May 6th, 2007 9:19 am

if u understood the title can u plese post a translation? its part of an email from a frined in Japan. the "hen na koto" and "shitsurei na koto" i can understand, but the rest confuses me!
also, there was
"waruikoto ittetara gomennasai."
the "ittetara" is once again confusing

変なことと言ってたり失礼なこと言ってたら、言ってね。
henna koto to ittetari, shitsureina koto ittetara, ittene.
(The strange things you say, when rude things are said, what is meant?)

At a glance, this is what I get from it, may be a little off. The ”tara” after a verb is usually (if or when) meaning.

waruikoto to ittetara, gomenasai = I'm sorry for saying bad things (or if I said bad things)

Hope this helps..

Only a guess, sorry, but it sounds like:

"If I say something strange or rude, then please tell me."

actually that sounds better, I was translating too literally, but now that I read it, yours sounds more like what was meant.

What about 'tari' after a verb?

One use of the ~tari construction is to express a list of actions in no particular order, with the implication that you may not be listing everything that you've done. Here's an example:

今日は部屋を片付けたり、洗濯したり、古い新聞を捨てたりしました。

Today I did things like tidying up my room、doing laundry, and throwing away some old newspapers.

So the translation of 変なことと言ってたり失礼なこと言ってたら、言ってね would be:

If I do anything like saying something strange or saying something rude, let me know.

Hope this helps.

Oops. I just realized that there was more to the question. ^^;

"waruikoto ittetara gomennasai" would mean:

If/In case I say something bad, I'm sorry.

Basically, with the two sentences that you were having trouble translating, your pen pal is apologizing in case she's said something bad. And she wants you to let her know if she does something like saying something rude or something that doesn't make sense.

Wow, thanks. I rarely, if ever, read a sentence with tari particle, so this really helps.
