「なので」と「で」

Postby tomokotomokodesu_502163 » October 19th, 2014 3:29 am

Hello everyone!

I was reading something and came across 「で」, but wasn't too sure what way it was being used in.
名前は淳、誕生日は6月1日です。
Another example: 名古屋外国語大学の学生、英語を専攻しています。

It's the "and, because" form, right?

Also, what does 「なので」 mean? I never found the meaning.
なので、僕の名前はJune-ichiです。

Thank you for the help!

Not sure what you mean ... but anyway, it's not the particle で, it's the ~て form of です. And it does work like "and" joining two simple sentences:-

名古屋外国語大学の学生です。英語を専攻しています。 ⇒ 名古屋外国語大学の学生で、英語を専攻しています。

Possible translations:-

I'm a student at Nagoya University and I'm studying English.
I'm a student at Nagoya University; I'm studying English.
I'm a student at Nagoya University - I'm studying English.

Tomokotomokodesu さん、
こんにちは。

て form (で) has some functions.
Te-form which マイケルさんexplained is one of them.
It indicates ‘and’because your examples are so.
ありがとうございます、マイケルさん。いつもながら素晴らしい説明ですね。

友子さん、
If you want to know てform indicates reasons, your examples should be

病気(びょうき)で学校(がっこう)を休(やす)みました。
Because I was sick, I didn’t go to school.

Regarding the last sentence you provided,
なので means ‘so’ as you know however, we don’t have a sentence before なので which means we don’t know the reason.

I guess a sentence before that may be
父の名前は淳二です。そして、僕の名前にはその淳の字があります。
My father's name is Junji and my name has the same kanji 淳.
なので、僕の名前は淳一です。
Therefore, my name is junichi.
