What is written here?

Postby LmdL123_500651 » July 20th, 2014 2:43 am

Hi all,
I've recently bought an old Japanese cigarette case (seems like it is from Meiji era). There are some writings on it I will be happy to know, what they mean:
Picture 1:

Picture 2:

On picture 1, two first characters seem to be the maker's name and the last character seems to be "TSUKURU" - "Made By". Can someone help me to read the first 2 characters?
On picture 2, the middle symbol is "riki" - "Power", but what are the others' meanings?

Thanks in advance!

LmdL123 san,

I guess the first two characters are
義 and 重.
However, it may be wrong.

In the second picture
金 money/ gold
佛 Buddha,

The first is not complete and is the name of a famous Daimyo : Yoshishide Satake (義重 佐竹)

The last one is is not complete and is part of a famous Buddhist Sutra (大通方廣懺悔滅罪莊嚴成佛經) and must be read: Namu Kin Ryoku Butsu (南無金力佛) - we honor the powerful golden Buddha

Softtoffol san,
Thank you!
I read about Satake Yoshishige on wiki, and it says he was living in 1547 - 1612, which is inconsistent, since this mark appears on cigarette case made during Meiji / Taisho era (beginning of the 19th century).
More than that, the last character - 作 - is "made by" for sure and not a part of the maker's name. It appears on all signed Japanese cigarette cases of Meiji / Taisho era, regardless the name of the maker.

I attach more signs of the same maker, in hope it can help:

I found two sources, on the first one it is attributed to "Moho Saku [美星作]", on the other one to "Yoshi Hiko Suku". I don't know to whom to believe, if any one of them is correct at all.

Thank you!

LmdL123 san,

Konnichiwa.
I am sorry I do not know a lot about an antique.
How about asking expert?
Have a look at the website below and ask shop staffs about that?

Hi Yuki san,
I tried to ask several online antique shops. No one even replied.
Still hope someone here can identify the middle kanji.

Hi Yuki san,
Your advice actually solved the problem!
I got an answer from one of the online antique stores representative. He told me that he saw this mark before, and that maker's name is Yoshihiko (義彦).

Thank you!
Best regards.
