You could have broken my leg!" He tells you in Japanese, "Well, no, not really. I'm not that good yet. But my teacher could! He's so intimidating…sometimes I feel as if he could snap me into two pieces just by staring me down." You tell him in Japanese, "Well, he sounds like a great instructor, but you just look ridiculous.
Peter：Happy new year every one. Peter Here. There’s a new year’s card from us posted on our web site. So please visit our web site at Japanesepod101.com. And be sure to leave us a comment.
Peter: So, Sakura-san is going home to have Osechi, which is the traditional Japanese meal for the new year.
Peter:So, Naomi-sensei is going to the shrine located near our office, Hie-jinja.
A celebrity. Because there is a TV station nearby, right?
Peter: TBS.
And they have, you know, new year programs で、 in between filming they visit the shrine.
Peter: Are you serious?
That's what I heard.
I think I'll go back to the office. It's a nice quiet day to get some work done.　
Peter: So, it's said that New Year’s day is the key to the year. I don't really get this.
Peter: New Year’s day is the key to the year.
さくら：It's important.
Peter: That's why I'm trying to figure it out. I don't know.
Peter: From the first day and every day will...
Peter: Have a good first day and then the rest will fall in line.
Peter: Ah, year of the cow.
Peter: So, if you are in Japan, or you get postcards from Japan, there may be a cow on it.
I'm looking forward to it!
Peter: Were either of you born in the year of the cow?
That's a tricky question.
Because 干支 comes around in every 12 years, right? So, if you ask somebody 干支, you can guess their age.
Peter: So, it's really good way to...
Peter: But that's such a common question. That's why I usually ask. Because even if you don't ask the person's year of birth, you can ask the person's Chinese zodiac sign, and then guess their age with a little detective work.
We don't usually ask Chinese zodiac, though.
Peter: Really? I always do.
No. Especially not to women. Women of a certain age... You can if you are all students, because everybody knows then.
Peter:So, at the office, it's not recommended to ask Sakura-san...
さくら: No..
Peter: So, Sakura-san, what are we going to do today, on this New Year's day to make this day the key to the year.
I'm going to answer all the 年賀状 I received to start off with.
Peter: Are you serious?
Yes, to make sure that I get things done on that immediately. To do things today that should be done today.
Peter: That's such a good answer.
Thank you. I say it every new year.
Peter: You've been practicing. And, everybody out there, what are you going to do to make the day a key to the year.
Peter: I'll leave the office at five.
Peter: So, from everyone here at JapanesePod101.com, we wish you
Peter: Happy new year and we are looking forward to another great year together.
