Advanced Japanese Lesson:

=====
Previously, the meaning of the sentence “that’s the miso” was introduced. Now, do you know what this sentence with the same structure “that’s the kimo” means.

When kimo is written in kanji, it is 肝.  In other words, it is the liver. The liver is an organ with an important role, and since it is often used figuratively, many different idioms have derived from it.

If you say “the kimo is big (the kimo is thick)” it expresses “a bold personality that doesn’t fear or get surprised over anything.”
If you say “the kimo squats” it means “to have courage, and is not surprised or disturbed by trivial things.”
If you “are taken by surprise with a sudden happening or an unexpected outcome” then you can say “to crush the kimo
“To cool the kimo” means “to feel one’s blood freeze” and can be used in this way, “while I was driving, a person on a bike jumped in front of me and made my blood freeze.”
Again, to point out “a strong mother who is shaken by nothing” is called “kimottama kaasan (mother with a ball of nerves)”

Let’s go back to the sentence at the beginning now.   The sentence “that’s the kimo” doesn’t mean that somebody is pointing at the liver and stating “that’s the liver.” Actually, in this case kimo is used to mean “the most important point.” Therefore, if you only know it as the definition of “liver”, you will struggle with the meaning. Here are some examples.

  • Listening to the criticism until the end is the kimo of dealing with customer complaints.
  • The kimo of wearing tops in fashion is to match the color with the pants!
  • Gathering data is the kimo to finish a graduating thesis quickly.
