★ Frequently Asked Questions about the JLPT

What’s the JLPT?
The JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) tests reading comprehension, grammar, and listening skills in Japanese. The test is geared towards those who are non-native speakers of Japanese. Until this year, there were four levels, 4 being the easiest level and 1 being the hardest. Starting this year, however, the number of levels has been increased to five (N1, N2, N3, N4, N5), with N5 being the easiest level and N1 being the hardest.

N1: nearly equivalent to the old level 1 (more advanced)
N2: equivalent to the old level 2
N3: between the old levels 2 and 3
N4: equivalent to the old level 3
N5: equivalent to the old level 4

When does the JLPT take place?
In 2010, the JLPT is being held twice: the first test (Levels 1, 2, and 3 only) is being held on July 4th, and the second test (all levels) is being held on December 5th.

Where can I take the JLPT?
The JLPT is offered in Japan as well as in countries all throughout the world. While the second test in December is being held in all areas, the first test in July is only being held in select areas. To find out if the JLPT is being held in your area in July, please consult this list from the official JLPT website:
