野沢菜味: 今年もよろしくね、桜子。ハワイはどうだった。
Best wishes for this year too, Sakurako. How was Hawaii?
那須実: 大葉さん、ハワイ 行ったの?
Ms. Ōba, you went to Hawaii?
大葉桜子: うん。五泊七日で 行ってきた。おばあちゃんが 住んでいるんだ。
Yeah. I went for seven days and five nights. My granny lives there, you know.
はい、これお土産。気に入るかどうか わからないけど。
ChrisHere, I have a souvenir for you. I don't know whether or not you'll like it, though.
野沢菜味: ありがとう!開けてもいい?
Thanks! Can I open it?
大葉桜子: うん。
Yeah.
野沢菜味: ブレスレット!かわいい!二本も?いいの?

那須実: 似合うかどうか・・・。
But whether or not they'll look good on you...
野沢菜味: うるさい。
Shut up.
那須実: 大葉さん、俺のお土産は?
Ms. Ōba, what about my souvenir?
大葉桜子: あるよ。甘いものが好きかどうかわからなかったけど、チョコ買ったんだ。

那須実: サンキュー。
Thanks!
桃屋先生: はい、座って。あけましておめでとう。
Alright, sit down. Happy New Year.
先生からお年玉があります。
ChrisI have a New Year's gift for you all.
みんなが休み中に勉強したかどうか知りたいので今からテストをします。
I want to know whether or not you all studied during the holidays, so we're going to have a test now.
問題用紙は全部で五枚。テスト時間は30分。
There are five sheets of questions. The time for the test is thirty minutes.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Chris: 桜子・・・これは普通の名前ですか? Is Sakurako a common name? Because I’ve never heard it before.
Naomi: Commonかどうかはわかりませんが…、女の子の名前ですよ。めずらしい名前じゃないです。お金持ちで、きれいな女の子というイメージがありますね。ま、ただのステレオタイプですけどね。
Chris: なるほど。So Sakurako is not an uncommon name, but it carries the stereotype of a well-off, or rich, beautiful girl or woman.
Naomi: 面白いですよね。人の名前にイメージを持っているのって。
Chris: Yes. It's interesting that names carry their own stereotypes of the people who have them. Even though that stereotype, of course, isn't always true!
Naomi: 英語でもあります?お金持ちそうな名前とか。。。美人そうな名前とか。。。
Chris: え〜 ありますね。There are some names like that in my image, in English. 例えば、For example, Bianca.
Naomi: Bianca? どんなイメージ?
Chris: すごいお嬢様の感じですね。
Naomi: ヘェ〜
Chris: 結構珍しい、とは申し結構お金持ちなイメージがあるんですね。
Naomi: もちろん、クリスさん勝手のイメージでしょう。
Chris: もちろんですね。もう一つ質問があります。
Naomi: 何ですか?怖いな・・・。
Chris: 桜子さんは「おばあちゃんが、住んでいる」と言いましたね。
Naomi: そうですね。「おばあちゃんが、ハワイに住んでいる」という意味ですね。
Chris: 「おばあちゃん」は大丈夫ですか?「そぼ」じゃないですか? Shouldn't it be そぼ since Sakurako is talking about her own grandmother?
Naomi: ああ、すごくいい質問ですね。 これは、高校生同士のカジュアルな会話なので、「おばあちゃん」と言っているんですね。友達同士のカジュアルな会話だと、my mother を おかあさん とか my father をおとうさんとか、言うこともあります。
Chris: でも、テストで使うとだめですね。
Naomi: ああ、だめですね。日本語のクラスやテストでは、my grandmotherは そぼ my mother は はは my father は ちち と言ってください。
Chris: そうですね。So in casual conversation, people often say おばあちゃん for their own grandmother, as well as おかあさん for "my mother" and おとうさん for "my father". But in correct Japanese, for example in a Japanese test, you should definitely use the proper terms そぼ, はは and ちち.
Naomi: そう、絶対。では、単語を勉強しましょう。

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Chris: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Naomi: The first word/phrase we’ll look at is....
Chris: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.直美先生、最初の表現は何ですか?
Naomi: 気に入る
Chris: to like, to be pleased with, take a fancy to.
読み方難しいですね。「きにはいる」じゃないんですね。
Naomi: そうですね。「きにいる」。漢字、難しいですね。
Chris: Yeah, the reading is tricky. Because you can also read as きにはいる but it's not correct. It's きにいる 。例文お願いします。Sample sentence please.
Naomi: 私は、この仕事が気に入っている。
Chris: I'm happy with this job.
「すき」と何が違いますか。
Naomi: うーん。似ていますが、ちょっと違いますね。
気に入るは 「好みにあう」"to match my taste" って感じですかね。
「気に入る」を人に使うと、ちょっと偉そうです。評価しているみたい。
Chris: So 気に入る sounds a little arrogant when used to describe people, as if you're evaluating them.
Naomi: 例えば、「私は、これが気に入った。」
Chris: "I like this." as in, "This suits me," or "This matches my tastes".
Naomi: 「Item plus 気に入る」は 大丈夫。
でも、人に向かって、「私は、ケンが気に入った。」だと、とても偉そうです。ケンが自分より年下なら、いいですけど、自分と同じレベルとか目上の人には使わないほうがいいですね。
Chris: You can take an item or someone who has lower status than you as an object of 気に入る, but not someone who has equal social status or higher social status.
次の表現はなんですか。OK. What's the next expression?
Naomi: 五泊七日
Chris: Five nights and seven days.
Naomi: 泊 は カウンターですね。
Chris: Right. Haku is a counter suffix for overnight stays.
Naomi: 英語だと dayとnight, 日と泊 はどちらを先に言います?
Chris: そうですね。We usually say "days" first. Like "Five days, six nights".
Naomi: なるほど。日本語だと、泊がいつも先です。七日五泊は絶対いわないです。
Chris: なるほど。In Japanese, you always have to say the number of nights first.
Naomi: そうです。日本語は、いつも泊が先と覚えたほうがいいですね。
Chris: 絶対に。

Lesson focus

Chris: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to form the structure “whether or not” in Japanese.
Naomi: 「かどうか」ですね。
Chris: Can we have a sentence from the dialogue?
Naomi: 気に入るかどうかわからないけど。
Chris: "I don't know whether or not you'll like it though." Let's break this down
Naomi: 気に入る (to like) かどうか(whether or not) わからない(I don't know) けど(but, though)
formation は [informal speech] plus かどうか.
Chris: Actually“ka dō ka” follows an informal yes-no question sentence.
Naomi: 行くかどうか わからない。
Chris: "I don’t know whether or not I’ll go."
Naomi: おいしいかどうか わからない。
Chris: "I don’t know whether or not it’s tasty."
Naomi: すきかどうかわからない。
Chris: "I don’t know whether or not you'll like it."
Have you got that pattern?
Now let's tackle a slightly more challenging sentence.
Let's say "I don't know whether or not Ken is going to the party."
First say "I don't know".
Naomi: 私はわからない。
Chris: Next, how to say "Ken is going to the party"?
Naomi: ケンはパーティーに行く。
Chris: Combine these two sentences.
Naomi: 私は、ケンがパーティーに行くかどうか わからない。
Chris: "I don't know whether or not Ken is going to the party."
Did you notice something?
Naomi: Ken was marked by particle が, right?
Chris: The subject of the question sentence before かどうか is marked by particle ga.
OK, listeners, listen and repeat after Naomi-sensei.
Naomi: 私は、ケンがパーティーに行くかどうか わからない。
Chris: Usually the topic わたし and は is omitted, right?
Naomi: はい、そうです。
Chris: OK. So here's a recap quiz for you listeners, How do you say, "I don't know whether or not this is tasty."
Chris: Here's a hint. This is tasty, isn’t it?
Naomi: これはおいしい
Chris: You have to insert this into わたしはわからない。
To do so, you have to mark これ with a particle が
Naomi: わかりましたか?
Chris: Did you get the answer? Naomi-sensei the answer is?
Naomi: 私はこれがおいしいかどうかわからない。
Chris: "I don't know whether or not this is tasty."
このフレーズいつ使いますか?When do you use this phrase.
Naomi: お土産を渡すときに使いますね。「おいしいかどうかわからないけど・・・」とか「すきかどうかわからけど」とか。
Chris: I see ... Like when you bring someone some cookies or some kind of food back as a souvenir, I don’t know if you’ll like it but… here you go.
Naomi: そうですね。じゃ、このレッスンはここまで。
Chris: このレッスンがわかりやすかったかどうかおしえてください。
Naomi: お!いいサンプルセンテンスですね。是非お願いします。
Chris: Please let us know whether or not this lesson was easy to understand.

Outro

Chris: See you next time.
Naomi: じゃ、また。
