| Becky: And I'm Becky. In this lesson, you'll learn how to try clothes on in a fitting room at a shop. |

| Kaori: して買ったことはありますか。 |
| Becky: Yes, I've tried on pants to buy in Japan. But it was a little difficult to find a good size for me, because Japanese sizes are different from the US ones. |
| Kaori: そうですね。試着した洋服がちょっときつい |
| Becky: a bit tight |
| Kaori: ときは、「もうひとつ上のサイズはありますか。」と聞いてみましょう。 |
| Becky: When you think the clothing you tried on is a bit tight for you, you might want to ask “do you have one size bigger?” |
| Kaori: もうひとつ上のサイズはありますか。 |
| MODEL DIALOG |
| Becky Listen to the dialogue and participate when prompted by speaking aloud in Japanese. Use the patterns of Japanese you studied in the Beginner-level lessons. After you speak, you'll hear a model line of dialogue. Your answer does not need to be exactly the same, but do compare your response to the model line. |
| In this lesson, you’ll play the role of someone who wants to try pants on in a fitting room. Your goal is to try two sizes of pants and pick the one that's best for you. |
| Becky: You find pants you want to try on, and tell a shop clerk that you want to try these pants on. |

| Shop Clerk: かしこまりました。こちらの試着室へどうぞ。 |
| Becky: The shop clerk showed you to a fitting room. After a while, he asks how it's going. Answer him with, “It’s a bit tight and I’d like to try one size bigger.” |
| Shop Clerk: いかがですか。。 |
| (Pause) |
| Person A: ちょっときついです。もうひとつ上のサイズはありますか。 |
| Shop Clerk: はい、少々お待ちください。(Pause) こちらです。どうぞ。 |
| Becky: You try a bigger pair. The shop clerk asks you how they are. Answer him with, “I’ll take it. Can you hem them up?” |
| Shop Clerk: いかがですか。 |
| (Pause) |
| Person A: これにします。裾上げしてもらえますか。 |
| Becky: The shop clerk answered that they could do it, but asked if it’s OK if it takes about one hour. Answer “yes”. |
| Shop Clerk: はい。1時間ほどお時間がかかりますが、よろしいですか。 |

| VOCABULARY AND PHRASES |
| Becky: Let’s take a look at some words and phrases useful for this task. The first word is |

| Becky: Here are words to describe how it fits after trying it on. |
| Kaori: きつい |
| Becky: tight |

| Becky: Here is its opposite word |

| Becky: loose |

| Becky: These words can be used to express how clothes fit you, as in, |

| Becky: It’s a little tight. |
| Kaori: ちょっとゆるいです。 |
| Becky: It’s a little loose. |
| Becky: Here's a phrase you can use when you think it fits just right. |
| Kaori: ちょうどいい |
| Kaori: ちょうど |
| Becky: just |

| Becky: literally means “just good”, but naturally means “perfect” |
| Kaori: ちょうどいい |
| Becky: Be careful of pronunciation of |
| Kaori: ちょっと and ちょうど、ちょっと and ちょうど |
| Becky: If you think it’s perfect, you say, |
| Kaori:ちょうどいいです。 |
| Becky: Then, if you think the size is perfect, but the length is too long, you can use a phrase, |
| Kaori: 裾が長い |
| Becky: meaning “the length is too long” |
| Kaori: 裾 |
| Becky: "hem." When the length of a skirt or a pair of pants is too long, you say, |
| Kaori: 裾が長い |
| Becky: In that case, you might want to ask if they can shorten it or take it up, which is, |
| Kaori: 裾上げする |
| Becky: to shorten a skirt or pair of pants |
| Kaori: 裾上げする、裾上げする |
| Becky: Here are useful phrases for when you ask for one size bigger or smaller. |
| Kaori: もうひとつ上のサイズ (Becky: or) もうひとつ大きいサイズ |
| Becky: one size bigger |
| Kaori: 上 |
| Becky: means "up", but when you talk about sizes, "上" means "bigger". |
| Kaori: もうひとつ上のサイズ (Becky: or) もうひとつ大きいサイズ |
| Becky: “one size bigger" |
| Becky: Here's the opposite phrase to mean “one size smaller”. |
| Kaori: もうひとつ下のサイズ (Becky: or) もうひとつ小さいサイズ |

| Becky: And add the sentence-ending phrase |

| Becky: ...to explain your situation and ask the shop clerk for his help. |
| Becky: Altogether it’s, |
| Kaori: このパンツを試着したいんですが。 |
| Becky: Let’s practice. Say “Excuse me. I'd like to try this skirt on.” |

| Becky: The next key expression is “Do you have one size bigger?” |
| Kaori: もうひとつ上のサイズはありますか。(Becky: or) もうひとつ大きいサイズはありますか。 |
| Becky: The first part of this sentence is “one size bigger”. |
| Kaori: もうひとつ上のサイズ(Becky: or) もうひとつ大きいサイズ |
| Becky: It’s followed by a question part meaning “do you have?" |
| Kaori: は ありますか。 |
| Becky: Altogether, it is... |
| Kaori: もうひとつ上のサイズはありますか。 or もうひとつ大きいサイズはありますか。 |
| Becky: Let’s practice. Ask “Do you have one size smaller?” |

| Becky: The last key expression is, “I’ll take this.” |
| Kaori: これにします。 |
| Becky: When you decide on which one you want at a shop or restaurant, you say “I’ll take (something)”. |

| Becky: Let's practice. Say "I'll take that." |

| Becky: What if you don’t want to buy it after trying it on? You say, |
| Kaori: またにします。 |

| Becky: It’s a set phrase to politely tell a shop clerk that you can’t make a decision today and you’ll decide later. |

| PRACTICE OF DIALOG |
| Becky: Now try to participate in the dialogue using some alternative words you learned in this lesson. This time, you’ll play the role of a person who's trying on a dress |
| J: ワンピース、ワンピース、ワンピース. |
| Becky: Use as many of the expressions you learned in this lesson as possible. Let's get started! |
| Becky: You find a dress you want to try on, and tell a shop clerk that you want to try this dress on. |

| Becky: The shop clerk shows you to a fitting room. After a while, he asks how it's going. Answer him with, “It’s a bit loose and I’d like to try one size smaller.” |

| Becky: You try a smaller one. The shop clerk asks you how it is. Answer him with, “I’ll take it. Can you hem it up?” |

| Becky: The shop clerk answered that they could do it, but asked if it’s OK if it takes about one hour. Answer “yes”. |
