東京
2011年3月…自立式電波塔として世界一の高さに到達した「東京スカイツリー」。「東京の新名所」との呼び声高いこちらは、各種マスメディアでも大きく取り上げられ、多くの観光客で日々、混雑しています。
東京スカイツリーは東京都墨田区に建ち、歩いて行ける範囲に、海外でも有名な観光地・浅草や、日本の国技・大相撲で知られる両国があります。
さて、東京スカイツリーの高さは634m。この数字に意味があることを知っていますか？634とは「語呂合わせ」で解釈すると、6は「むっつ（む）」、3は「さん（さ）」、4は「し」と読めることから、「むさし」。これを、漢字にすると「武蔵」、つまり1871（明治4）年まで使われていた昔の地名で、現在の東京・埼玉・神奈川の一部を含む広い地域のことなのです。
東京スカイツリーは、昔の「武蔵の国」に建てられたため、それにちなんで高さが634mになったのだそう。
ところで、地震大国・日本においてこれほどの高層建築物は災害時の甚大な被害が懸念されます。
しかし、技術の粋を結集して高い耐震性を実現。しかも、その原型はなんと奈良・法隆寺や京都・東寺などで有名な「五重塔」に採用されている建築構造にあるのだとか。これまで日本人が磨いてきた伝統の技を受け継ぎ、最先端の技術で再現したのが東京スカイツリーなのです。
「新しくて、しかも古い」…この新名所にますます注目が集まるでしょう。
