POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: ピーターさん、今日の会話これ意味わかりました?ダイアログの中に下駄箱を開けると、手紙が落ちる。
Peter: So I think I understand. In the dialog script it says, he opens the door to his shoe box, and out falls a letter. But shoe box is really shoe box as in ???(00: 07: 22) the English speaker would know it. Such as a box ???(00: 07: 25). It’s more like a little locker that you put your shoes in.
Naomi: そうですね。
Peter:そうするとわかります。If that’s the case,then I understand.
Yuichi: 日本の学校は靴を履きかえるんですね。学校に入るときに、靴を脱いで、上履きという靴に履き替えます。スリッパみたいなものです。
Peter: So when students enter school building, they have to change their shoes? So what are those sleepers they changing to be called?
Yuichi: 上履き。
Naomi: 学校の中が汚れないように、上履きに変えます。
Peter: So they change shoes so that’s the school doesn’t get dirty.
Naomi: だってね、中学生とか高校生の靴汚いでしょ。(笑い)
Yuichi: そうかもしれませんね。
Peter:So Namoi-sensei thinks the students who attend middle school and high school have dirty showes.(laughing)
Naomi: ま、全員じゃないですよ。
Yuichi: 外で遊んだりとかしますからね。
Naomi: そうそうそうそう。で、そのshoe box は下駄箱っていう風に言われます。
Peter:下駄箱。下駄というのは昔の靴ではないですか?
Naomi: そうです、そうです。木のサンダルです。
Peter: So 下駄 are type of shoes that were worn in Japan. Kind a wooden sandals.
Naomi: そうですね。Wooden clogs.
Peter: It’s very interesting from an linguistic perspective that the word is still used because nowadays nobody wears, well, everyone somewhat during a festivals or something, someone will wear this old type of shoes 下駄. Nowadays it’s more like snickers Nike.
Naomi: そう。
Peter: But we still have the word 下駄箱.
Naomi: 下駄箱って言いますね。靴箱は言わないですね、普通はね。
Yuichi: そうですね。
Peter: So quick question. Why did letters fall from there? People usually exchange letters in 下駄箱?
Naomi: あの、ポスト、mail boxみたいに使われたりするんですよね。
Peter: あ、わかりました。
Yuichi: So its kind like a locer in a school back in the States. So people put little a note on there and message.
Peter: あーなるほど。
Naomi: 中学校とか高校だと、自分のロッカーはないんですよね、日本は。ゆういちさんは、下駄箱ポストみたいに使ったことはありますか?
Yuichi:いや、実はないですね。
Peter: So Yuichi-san is never used this type of communication.
Yuichi: はい。汚いですもん、下駄箱
Naomi: ほら、汚いって言ってるじゃん。汚いんだよ、靴は。だから、上履きに履き替えるんです。
Yuichi: そうです。
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: On today’s vocabulary.
Naomi: では、単語を見ていきましょう。
Peter: Let's have a closer look at the usuage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Naomi: まず、最初の単語は。
Yuichi: 親友 best friend
これは、簡単な単語なのですが、ちょっと個人的に興味があって、pick up しました。親友って何人くらいなんですかね。
Naomi: ピーターさん、アメリカ人にとって、親友って何人くらいなんですか?
Peter: Well, for Americans,uhh...best friend 一人しかいないですね。Just one.
Naomi: あっ、ほんと?
Peter: しかし、あのー、in my best friend と言う表現を、何人に対して使っていいです。(笑い)
So only one give you a best, but you can tell bunch of people ‘You are best friend, Naomi.’ ‘Oh, Yuichi is my best friend.’ でも、一緒にいたら困ります。If you guys are together そういう質問されて、困ります。like you ask me ‘ Who’s my best friend?’ 日本だと?In case of Japan?
Naomi: 大体二人とか一人、二人ぐらいですよね。
Yuichi: うーん、一人じゃなくて大丈夫ですね。
Naomi: 5人とかって言うと、多すぎますよね。
Peter: Five is a little too many loud, two or three.
Naomi: 一人、二人、三人。
Yuichi: 2,3人ですね。
Naomi: 日本だと親友というのは、特別な友達っていう感じですよね。
Yuichi: So also Japan 親友 best friend is also very special. Special kind of friends.
Peter: So in the US, we have a kind of system-acquaintance,friend,best friend.
Naomi: 日本だとどんな感じでしょうかね。
Yuichi: acquaintanceは知り合いで、友達 friend、親しい友達 good friend or close friend、仲のいい友達の事は、親友 best friend になります。
Peter: はい、わかりました。
Naomi: 仲の良い友達と親しい友達は大体同じ意味ですね。
Peter: 次の単語お願いします。
Yuichi: 裏 reverse side, back 今日のダイアログには
体育館裏に来てください。Please come behind the school gym./Meet me behind the school gym
Naomi: The「の」 from 体育館の裏の「の」がないですよね。The「の」 from 体育館の裏 is dropped.これは友達同士のカジュアルな会話だから「の」が入ってないんですね。
Peter: So because there are speaking casual Japanese friends の is dropped
Naomi: 反対の言葉 the opposite word is 表 (front)
Yuichi: これって、性格を現すこともできますよね。
Naomi: はい。
Peter:And you can use this for describing one's personalities.
Naomi: 裏のある人
Peter: Two faced person.
Naomi: 表裏がある人
Peter: Same meaning.
Naomi: 裏がある人、裏のある人、表裏のある人、表裏がある人、どれでも大丈夫です。ね、ピーターさん。
Peter:そうですね。(笑)
Naomi: You are best friend. 例えば、どんな風に使います?
Yuichi: 彼は表裏がある。信用できない。(He is a double dealer. I can't trust him.)
Naomi: そうだよね。みんなに親友、親友って言ってて、二人が会ったら困るんでしょ。
Yuichi: そうですね。信用できないですね。
Peter: Is there proverb related to this?
Naomi: あー、you mean 上手い話には裏がある。(There's always a catch to something good.)
ピーターこれ好きそうですよね。I think you like it.
Peter: ちょっとよくわかんない…(笑)
Naomi: 後、裏声なんていうのもありますよね。
Peter: Uhh, falsetto. 祐一さんお願いします。
Yuichi: (裏声で)はい。(一同笑)
はい、次行きましょう。

Lesson focus

Peter: Okay. Today's grammar point ." Giving and receiving verbs" which are ageru, kureru and morau.
First let's take a look at the verbs for giving, they are Naomi-sensei.
Naomi: あげる and くれる
Peter: The verbs are both translated as "to give" but which one you choose depends on the direction of the transaction. We’re gonna clear this up just a second. In general,あげる means to give. For example Natsuko is going to give Kouji some chocolate.
Yuichi: なつこ は 浩二に チョコレートを あげる
Peter: So in this sentence, the flower is going from Natsuko to Koji. So Natsuko is going to give Koji some chocolate. So particle に marks direction or person that is going to.Whereas the verb kureru is used when a thing moves toward the speaker.
Yuichi: なつこは僕に チョコレートをくれる。
Peter: In this case, the thing is moving towards the speaker, 僕. Now inside the PDF there is very detail explanation about particle usage for giving and receiving verbs. This is the key to really understanding them. OK then, let's look at the usage of Morau "to recieve" The basic sentence structure is?
Yuichi: 人に 物を もらう。
Peter: The person who give the object is marked with に and the object is marked with を. Can we have a sample sentence?
Yuichi: 浩二はなつこにチョコレートをもらう。
Peter: Kouji is going to receive some chocolate from Natsuko. Naomi-sensi,this sentence is Koji is going to receive from Natsuko. Naomi-sensei, this sentence says the same thing as previous sentence just a verb changed.
Naomi: なつこはこうじにチョコレートをあげる。こうじはなつこにチョコレートをもらう。あっ、そうですね。
Peter: Same . Same exact thing. It’s just the verbs are different. And when the verbs are different, the particles are going to be different. So just to recap. Side by side. One more time. Let’s go with “to give”, the verb, “to give”. Natsuko will give chocolate to Koji.
Naomi: なつこはこうじにチョコレートをあげる。
Peter:So here Natsuko is marked with は and Koji is marked with に. The direction is going towards Koji. In next sentence, We are going to use the verb もらう to receive.
Naomi: こうじはなつこにチョコレートをもらう。
Peter:In this sentence, the person doing giving is gonna be mark with ?
Naomi: に
Peter: So the sentence leads ?
Naomi: こうじはなつこにチョコレートをもらう。
Peter: Again, inside the PDF is very detailed explanation of this giving and receiving verbs are extremely important.
Naomi: I think あげる and もらう are not so difficult for English speaking people. But the concept of くれる is bit difficult.
Peter: Okay. Now one last thing. Naomi-sensei, we have a question here. I think I want to ask Yuichi-sensei.
Naomi: あー、祐一先生、この前の誕生日に誰に何をもらいましたか?(What do you receive from somebody for your last birthday?)
Yuichi: 両親にデジカメをもらいました。
Peter: So you got a digital camera from your parents?
Yuichi: はい。
Peter: 私は祐一にケーキをあげましたね。
Yuichi: ピーターにケーキをもらっていません。ピーターに図書カードをもらいました。
Peter: 図書カードって何ですか?
Naomi: Gift certificate of books.
Peter: あげていません。
Naomi: 私が、図書カードを買いました。それで、祐一さんいあげました。
Peter: あー思い出しました。 I don’t remember. そうですね。
Naomi: ピーターは日本にいませんでしたね。You weren’t in Japan.みなさんは、誕生日に誰に何をもらいましたか。教えてください。
Peter: And one more thing we before go. A lot of people emailed us and asked for the difference between は and が. It’s very very difficult. But if you noticed, one we are doing exchange, When Naomi jumped in, she said わたしが that’s because the subject changed. So a lot of time, が is used to indicate a change of subject. The topic that we will be discussing changed. So that was very interesting.
Yuichi: じゃあまた。
DIALOGUE
