警察 (keisatsu) : なるほど。メッセージをききながら、運転していた・・・。(Naruhodo. Messēji o kikinagara, unten shite ita…)

: あ、知っています?運転しながら携帯電話をさわってはいけないんですよ。(A, shitte imasu? Unten shinagara keitai denwa o sawatte wa ikenai n desu yo.)
Kat: Ah, are you aware that you are not allowed to touch your mobile phone while driving?

POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: モエさんは、交通違反をしたんですね。(Moe-san wa, kōtsū ihan o shita n desu ne.)
Kat: うん。
Naomi: 交通違反は英語でなんですか。(Kōtsū ihan wa Eigo de nan desu ka.)
Kat: Umm.. “a violation of traffic rules”
交通 (kōtsū) means “traffic” and 違反 (ihan) is a “violation.”
Naomi: なるほど。(Naruhodo.)
Kat: なおみ先生は運転免許を持っていますか。(Naomi-sensei wa unten menkyo o motte imasu ka.) Do you have a driver's license?
Naomi: はい。持っていますよ。(Hai. Motte imasu yo.) Yes. I do.
Kat: 交通違反をしたことはありますか。(Kōtsū ihan o shita koto wa arimasu ka.)
Naomi: えーと、したことはあります。けど、見つかったことはありません。(Ēto, shita koto wa arimasu. Kedo, mitsukatta koto wa arimasen.)
Kat: (laugh) なんですか、それ。(Nan desu ka, sore.) So, Naomi-sensei has indeed committed a traffic violation but has never been caught.
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.)
Kat: Which is why she is with us today. (laugh)
Naomi: Speeding とかね。(“Speeding” toka ne.)
Kat: あー、そう。(Ā, sō.) Just going slightly off the speed level…
Naomi: ちょっと、ちょっとだけね。(Chotto, chotto dake ne.)
Kat: Umm, just a little bit.
Naomi: はい。キャットさんは?免許持っていますか。(Hai. Kyatto-san wa? Menkyo motte imasu ka.)
Kat: Do I have a driver's license?
Naomi: はい。(Hai.)
Kat: うーん。残念ながら、持っていません。(Ūn. Zannen nagara, motte imasen.) Unfortunately, I do not have a driver’s licence.
Naomi: そうなんですか。(Sō nan desu ka.)
Kat: That’s so embarrassing considering how old I am.
Naomi: じゃあ、交通違反はしたことがありませんか。(Jā, kōtsū ihan wa shita koto ga arimasen ka.)
Kat: ありませんね。(Arimasen ne.) Of course I have never violated a little traffic laws because I can not in fact drive coillergary. ところで携帯の違反はいくらですか。(Tokorode keitai no ihan wa ikura desu ka.)
Naomi: あ、ダイアログの?(A, daiarogu no?)
Kat: あ、ダイアログの。そうですね。(A, daiarogu no. Sō desu ne.) Does Moe have to pay a fine for using her mobile phone in the car in the dialog?
Naomi: I think so. 運転をしながら携帯電話は・・・6000円くらいだと思います。(Unten o shinagara keitai denwa wa… roku-sen-en kurai da to omoimasu.)
Kat: So, Naomi-sensei said that the fine for using your mobile phone in a car would be about maybe 6,000 yen. That’s actually a lot less than I’ve expected. But that’s no reason to do it.
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.)
Kat: みなさん、気をつけてください。(Mina-san, ki o tsukete kudasai.) Everyone, please take care.
VOCAB LIST
Kat: Alright. So, now let's take a look at the vocabulary for this lesson.
And the first word we are going to see is:
Naomi: 止まる (tomaru) [natural native speed]
Kat: to stop, to halt
Naomi: 止まる (tomaru) [slowly - broken down by syllable]
Naomi: 止まる (tomaru) [natural native speed]
Kat: And next:
Naomi: 見せる (miseru) [natural native speed]
Kat: to show, to display
Naomi: 見せる (miseru) [slowly - broken down by syllable]
Naomi: 見せる (miseru) [natural native speed]
Kat: And next:
Naomi: ただ (tada) [natural native speed]
Kat: just, only
Naomi: ただ (tada) [slowly - broken down by syllable]
Naomi: ただ (tada) [natural native speed]
Kat: And next:
Naomi: なるほど (naruhodo) [natural native speed]
Kat: Okay, I see
Naomi: なるほど (naruhodo) [slowly - broken down by syllable]
Naomi: なるほど (naruhodo) [natural native speed]
Kat: And finally:
Naomi: 触る (sawaru) [natural native speed]
Kat: to touch
Naomi: 触る (sawaru) [slowly - broken down by syllable]
Naomi: 触る (sawaru) [natural native speed]
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Kat: OK. So now, let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. And the first one we are going to look at is?
Naomi: ただ (tada)
Kat: ただ (tada) has a few different meanings, but the ただ (tada) in this dialogue means “simply”, “only” or “just.” It’s sometimes used with だけ (dake) at the end of the sentence meaning “only” for emphasis.
Naomi: ただ見ているだけです。(Tada mite iru dake desu.)
Kat: “I’m just looking.”
Naomi: Or you can drop い (i) and say… ただ見てるだけです。(Tada mite ru dake desu.)
Kat: Which is same meaning, “I'm just looking.”
Naomi: そうですね。あと、前に勉強しましたが「ただ」は無料の意味もありますよね。(Sō desu ne. Ato, mae ni benkyō shimashita ga “tada” wa muryō no imi mo arimasu yo ne.)
Kat: So, we studied this a little before, but you might remember ただ (tada) also has the meaning of “free” as in no charge, not having to pay for something.
Kat: And the next word is?
Naomi: なるほど (naruhodo)
Kat: “I see.” なるほど (naruhodo) is basically used to show one’s agreement or understanding of what one has just heard.
Naomi: 相槌のひとつですよね。(Aizuchi no hitotsu desu yo ne.) It's a type of 相槌 (aizuchi).
Kat: Yes, it's a type of 相槌 (aizuchi) or agreeing words or just words to get a conversation going which are frequently used in a daily Japanese conversation.
Naomi: Agreeing words って言うんだ、相槌。(“Agreeing words” tte iu n da, aizuchi.)
Kat: To show you are listening to the other person, I guess.
Naomi: うーん、なるほどね。(Ūn, naruhodo ne.) But なるほど (naruhodo) is used when you hear rather longer and bit complicated explanation.
Kat: なるほど。(Naruhodo.) I see. It's like "I see what you mean" or "Ah, I get it" or “Ah, I understand” in English. So when you heard a little bit longer explanation or you hear something more complicated that the other person told you, you could say なるほど (naruhodo), “I see.”
Naomi: そうです。(Sō desu.)

Lesson focus

Kat: Now, in this lesson you’ll learn how to express two actions been performed at the same time by the same subject.
Naomi: For example… 私は音楽を聞きながら勉強する。(Watashi wa ongaku o kikinagara benkyō suru.)
Kat: "I study while listening to music."
The formation is [the masu-stem of a verb] + ながら (nagara) which means "while doing something."
Naomi: Right.
Kat: So firstable, how do you say "to listen" in Japanese?
Naomi: 聞く (kiku)
Kat: And the masu-form is?
Naomi: 聞きます (kikimasu)
Kat: And now, take off ます (masu) to get the masu-stem.
Naomi: 聞き (kiki)
Kat: Attach ながら (nagara).
Naomi: 聞きながら (kikinagara)
Kat: And this means "while listening." Can we have a sample sentence please?
Naomi: はい。音楽を聞きながら勉強する。(Hai. Ongaku o kikinagara benkyō suru.)
Kat: "I study while listening to music." Listeners, listen and repeat.
Naomi: 音楽を聞きながら勉強する。(Ongaku o kikinagara benkyō suru.)
Kat: (pause) Listeners, say "I study while listening to music" in Japanese.
Naomi: (pause) 音楽を聞きながら勉強する。(Ongaku o kikinagara benkyō suru.)
Kat: OK. Let's do one more. How do you say "to eat"?
Naomi: 食べる (taberu)
Kat: And the masu-form is?
Naomi: 食べます (tabemasu)
Kat: And the masu-stem is?
Naomi: 食べ (tabe)
Kat: Now attach ながら (nagara).
Naomi: 食べながら (tabenagara)
Kat: And this means "while eating". Can we have a sample sentence?
Naomi: はい。ポップコーンを食べながら、映画を見る。(Hai. Poppukōn o tabenagara, eiga o miru.)
Kat: “I watch a movie while eating popcorn.” Listeners, listen and repeat.
Naomi: ポップコーンを食べながら、映画を見る。(Poppukōn o tabenagara, eiga o miru.)
Kat: (pause) Listeners, say "I watch a movie while eating popcorn."
Naomi: (pause) ポップコーンを食べながら、映画を見る。(Poppukōn o tabenagara, eiga o miru.)
Kat: いいですね~。(Ii desu nē.) Can we say 映画を見ながらポップコーンを食べる (eiga o minagara poppukōn o taberu) "I eat popcorn while watching a movie"?
Naomi: あ、はい。言えます。(A, hai. Iemasu.) But your sentence sounds like eating popcorn is more important than watching a movie.
Kat: Hmm. It might be. For me. (laugh)
Naomi: ところで、キャットさんは音楽を聞きながら勉強しますか。(Tokorode, Kyatto-san wa ongaku o kikinagara benkyō shimasu ka.)
Kat: ああ、しませんね。集中できませんから。(Ā, shimasen ne. Shūchū dekimasen kara.) I don’t listen to music while studying because I can’t concentrate.
Naomi: ああ、そうですよね。(Ā, sō desu yo ne.)
Kat: But how about everyone out there? Do you listen to music while studying? Please let us know in the comment.
Naomi: それからリスナーのみなさんに、もう一つ質問です。(Sorekara risunā no mina-san ni, mō hitotsu shitsumon desu.)
Kat: So we have one more question for everybody listening.
Naomi: 何をしながらJapanesePod101.comを聞いていますか。(Nani o shinagara Japanīzupoddo ichi maru ichi dotto komu o kiite imasu ka.)
Kat: What do you do while listening to JapanesePod101? Please let us know in the comments.
Naomi: 教えてください。じゃあ、また。(Oshiete kudasai. Jā, mata.)
Kat: Bye! See you next time.
