Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! Your friend tells you that she’s about to come visit you at your apartment in Japan, so you decide to start the clock. Although she’s a ten-minute Japanese subway ride away, she always takes four times as long to get to your house. To you, “about to” means immediate, but apparently these Japanese words mean something different to her!
In this lesson, you’ll learn about the usages of the Japanese word tokoro. Today’s two Japanese conversations take place on the phone and at a pizza place; the first is between a customer and a store clerk who are strangers; thus, they speak in formal Japanese. The second takes place between the store manager and a clerk, who speak informal and formal Japanese, respectively. You’ll learn how to use today’s Japanese word to say you’re “just about to” do something. Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! It’s your friend’s birthday, and it would be a good idea to buy her something. After all, she’s giving you a place to live and teaching you basic Japanese while you’re in Japan. You need to learn some new vocabulary to give her a gift and some polite conversation so you can thank the salespeople helping you buy the present for assisting you in Japanese. But you can’t ask your friend to teach you, or you’ll ruin the surprise! In this lesson, you will practice more with the Japanese construction A wa B desu. This Japanese conversation takes place in an unknown location between two distant family members; therefore, they will be speaking formal Japanese. You’ll learn how to identify things, give someone things, and some polite Japanese phrases in today’s lesson.
