I am brain dead from studying so much.” Your roommate plops down on the couch next to you and asks you in Japanese, “Anything I can do to help you?” You respond in Japanese, “Sure. You can run through some of the exercises from this Japanese lesson with me and see whether I can remember what you’re saying. But not right now.” Your roommate inquires in Japanese, “When do you want to do this?” You respond in Japanese, “Later on…after this show, or maybe during the commercials.” Your roommate chides you in Japanese, “A minute of studying here and there during the commercials isn’t going to help you pass the exam! Maybe if you concentrated half has hard on the exercises as you did on the television, you’d make some progress!”

Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! After a bunch of layoffs in your office in Japan, everyone is on edge…everyone but you, that is. That’s because the company hired you and a colleague as contractors to help the company streamline its Japanese operations. You’ve been traveling from office to office, cutting costs and people. You tell your friends in Japanese, “It’s not a glamorous job, but it pays the bills.” After a particularly nasty response from one employee, your colleague remarks in Japanese, “Do you think we should tell the rest of the office about the cuts to their benefits?” You reply in Japanese, “No…it’s certainly not our place to do that. We need to give the manager the instructions, and he can tell them when he is ready.” Your colleague tells you in Japanese, “Well, he’s finally calmed down from learning about the layoffs, but he still seems to be in a bad mood. Maybe we should let that sleeping dog lie a bit longer before we rile him up again!”

We should go to the mountains this weekend and hike.” You respond in Japanese, “I don’t know. I’ve never been hiking before. I don’t think I can do it.” Your friend answers in Japanese, “But you don’t know. If you don’t try, how will you know whether you can hike?” You protest in Japanese, “I don’t have any clothes, and I don’t have any shoes. Don’t I need special hiking boots?” Your friend replies in Japanese, “Don’t worry…we aren’t climbing Mount Fuji. We’ll just do some gentle hills. You can wear your tennis shoes.” You inquire in Japanese, “Just how long do you think we’ll be climbing? Do I need to go work out so I can get into better shape? I’m worried I won’t make it!” Your friend reassures you in Japanese, “I know you can do this. If you can walk, you can hike!”
