Rose-san,　never mind!
Actually, when you read Japanese text, the rules help you read appropriately.
We have a vowel combination which change sound.
ex) -ou → ō as in おとうと　otouto　→　[otōto] "little brother"
                   かつよう　katsuyou　→　[katsuyō] "conjugation"
other long vowels follows its spellings.
I hope this helps.

So sorry, i might have posted a silly question earlier...
I didn't pay attention to words like: あたらしい.
I see now that writing し with う would sound wrong, しい makes sense.
Still insecure about making あ え or う long though

みなさん、おはようございます。
First of all, thank you for these series, they are very helpful!
A question though, since i am a bit confused about the long vowels.
You have explained how to write a few of them, but it's not yet clear to me if there is a rule involved which can be applied to all of them?
Like, if the vowel is preceded by a consonant, you use う, but when it's a single vowel, you just double that one up to make it long?
Or is it randomly written depending on the vowel involved?
ありがとうございます for helping!

efim soferさん,
Thanks for your question -
The entire series is not free - only the first 3 lessons, and the most recent lessons. You will need at least a Basic subscription to download the rest.

Not to be picky...but I think this is supposed to be under season #2, right? :) It might be confusing for the casual visitor or new person to see it skip from lesson #7 to lesson #9 in season 2's listing.

I really love the lessons! Will there be a カタカナ series after this?

I cannot wait for #9 (would that be kyu or kuu?) as well as the Katakana series. Or are they there and I can't find them?

Thank you so much for doing this.

みなさん、
Thank you for your comments!

Michaelさん,
Good question!
I would say that for the individual characters, you see them all very often (with a few exceptions, for example, ぬ is not used in too many words). As for combinations, though, the "ky", "sh", and "ch" combinations are very common, but you don't see other combinations like "hy", "py" and "my" used nearly as much. I think as you learn and read more Japanese, you'll get a feel for which are more frequent

Very useful. Watching the stroke order as it happens is so helpful, as are the long vowels. Can't wait for you to do katakana, too. Might as well - I need to read menus!

And yes, I can now read most of Beginner Lesson #16.
