Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! You and your significant other are debating where to go for a brief vacation. You are tempted to ask your significant other to travel outside Japan, but you know it would be smarter to save money. In response to your economic concerns, your significant other suggests in Japanese, “Why don’t we have a ’staycation’ this year?” You ask in Japanese, “What’s a ’staycation?’” Your significant other explains in Japanese, “We’d take a week off, but we’d stay home and do things we could drive to for the day…we could go play golf, or we could go see a movie. At night, we could go out for dinner. So we’d still get to spend some down time together, and we wouldn’t be working full days, but we’d save money on travel.” You respond in Japanese, “That sounds acceptable, but only on the condition that you guarantee you’ll keep your computer off all week.” Your significant other responds in Japanese, “I’m not sure I can agree to that. My clients need me.” You decided to propose a compromise and suggest in Japanese, “What if we limit it to an hour a day. You need time off too!”

That wasn’t on my radar. When is it?” You tell him in Japanese, “It’s in a couple of weeks, just before we go on our vacation. I guess this means you haven’t thought about getting me a present, doesn’t it!”

Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! Sometimes, no matter how delightful the Japanese food is, no matter how kind and thoughtful your friends are, no matter how comfortable the accommodations, no matter how wonderful the shopping, you just want something from home. You look up ahead, and there, big as life, a welcoming beacon, the Golden Arches. The smile on your face could be mistaken for the Japanese rising sun. You leave your friends for a while and hurry in. Of course, everyone in the place is Japanese, and the signs are all in Japanese, but no matter, it’s a little bit of home. You make your way to the order counter and ask maybe the silliest question of your life, in Japanese - but you must ask it. “Do you have hamburgers?” Looking at you as if you have lost your mind, the clerk looks around as if this is a joke, and then slowly answer in Japanese, “Yes.” You continue hastily in Japanese, “Do you have french fries?” Again, he answers in Japanese, “Yes, we do.” Sighing in relief, you just have one last ridiculous question in Japanese, “Do you have milk shakes?” Staring in disbelief, the clerk answers again, “Yes.” A total success, and you asked all the right questions, all in Japanese. Life is good.

Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! “Why are you telling me to “shush?” you ask your friend in Japanese? “I’m just observing what’s going on. Why do I have to be quiet? What’s going on here?” Your friend has been shushing you ever since you started counting the waiters in Japanese in the little ramen shop where you’ve come to eat. It just does not make much sense. You can see only a very few tables and chairs, but lots of waiters. Why would a ramen shop have more waiters than chairs for customers? And your friend just keeps repeating, “shush” to make you keep still. You couldn’t have counted wrong. You know how to count in Japanese very well. Maybe the words you used to count weren’t right in Japanese. Maybe your friend was trying to save you the embarrassment of using the wrong Japanese counting words. Yeah, that must be it. How embarrassing!
