Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! Why do your Japanese friends do this to you? They mean well. They want you to have the best possible time in Japan, but sometimes it’s a bit much. Now they’ve arranged a blind date for you with a woman who speaks only Japanese. You’ve got to spend the entire time with her speaking only Japanese. The only preparation your friends provide is that they tell you in Japanese, “Her name is Nanami.” Your friends also tell you in Japanese, “You’re supposed to meet her at the East gate, the seventh gate into the park.” As you make your way along to the East gate, you practice your Japanese. You don’t know if she has seen you or will recognize you, so you’ll probably have to approach her. What will you say? Of course, the first words you will say in Japanese are, “Excuse me; are you Nanami?” And after that, you’ll introduce yourself. But what do you say after that? She only speaks Japanese. How will you talk with her? What will you do next? How will you get along with each other with such a language barrier? Difficult. Very difficult. As you approach the gate, you can see only one person standing alone there. Her back is to you. Bolstering your courage—it’s too late to turn back now—you walk close to her and repeat the Japanese words you have been practicing, “Excuse me; are you Nanami?” As she turns around, you are hit directly in the head with two of the most captivating eyes you’ve ever seen. “Yes, I’m Nanami.” And you know you’ll overcome any Japanese language barrier you have to! And you know exactly where to start!

Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! Where the heck is that son of yours hiding in Japan? You go to your son’s usual Japanese haunts, including the park around the corner from your apartment and the playground down the street that all the Japanese kids seem to love. But no matter how hard you look, your son is nowhere to be found! You run around the streets of your Japanese neighborhood like a madwoman, calling out in Japanese, “Here’s a picture. Has anyone seen my boy?” Finally, you run into one of your son’s friends from school. You frantically ask him in Japanese, “Have you seen my son?” When the boy tells you in Japanese that he has seen him, you grab him by the shoulders and yell in Japanese, “Tell me where he is!” The boy says in Japanese, “He went to the airport to watch the planes land.” More calmly, you ask him in Japanese, “You mean he went to the public airport and not the private one, don’t you?” When he nods affirmatively, your husband exclaims in Japanese, “Let’s go!”

Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! After you watch the evening news, you tell your friend in Japanese, “These newscasters have it all wrong. They’re buying into what the media says about the President, but they aren’t thinking about it for themselves.” Your friend tells you in Japanese, “How can you say that? What support do you have for your opinion? Just because your President is American doesn’t mean that he does the right thing all the time.” You tell your friend in Japanese, “That’s just my point. I don’t always agree with him, but the media personalities always seem to.” Your friend defends them by saying in Japanese, “Well, they’re paid to defend him…and if they didn’t, it would be bad for their careers, don’t you think?” You respond in Japanese, “I don’t know…maybe?” Your friend chides you in Japanese, “You always need to have an opinion! Don’t be wishy-washy.” You explain to your friend in Japanese, “I was trying to avoid fighting with you about that, but I guess everything I say is just wrong!”
