Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! “Come watch the television with us,” your friends tell you in Japanese. Since they spoke in Japanese, you answer in the same, “Why, what’s so important to watch?” “The launch,” they reply in Japanese. “Don’t you know about the launch?” “What launch? Is it a boat? A ship? A new vacation cruise ship?” They all look at you as if you were a little off. Of course, your friends are all very savvy in technology, but you’re not, so you get those kinds of looks often. “The rocket launch,” they say, “Don’t you know the Japanese Space Agency is launching a rocket today?” You didn’t even know Japan had a space agency. “They’re televising the launch, and we all want to watch it. Come with us. It’ll be great.” Well, they are your friends, so you decide to go along. At least the picture on the television is a really good one. You can see every detail of the rocket as you watch the final moments before countdown. Countdown! Now you can hear the announcer countdown in Japanese, “Ten, nine,…” Amazing! You can understand every word of the Japanese countdown!!!

Hiroko-san’s new hairstyle is VERY cute.

And it was helpful to learn the kanji too!

Cool. I liked the combo of the spoken word, hiragana, kanji, and the highlighted “flow” of the spoken word. And variations on yon and nana were given. Keep up the inventive and clever lessons.

Well i got a question for you guys,

What is the difference between Yon and Shi (4) ?
And the same goes for Nana and Shichi (7) ?

Can anyone explain me those differences?
Tyvm,

Danny

Angry Katie says:

Danny,

The different pronunciations are used in different situations like telling time, counting animals/objects, etc. You’ll learn which one to use through practice and listening to native speakers.

For example, if you are telling time and you want to say its 4:00 you say よ時 not し because し can stand for 死ぬ (death). So when a lot of people use the number 4 they tend to say よん and not し。 As for 7, If you are talking about time you should say しち時 (7:00) not なな時。 However, if you want to say April (the fourth month of the year) you say し月。 If you want to say July (the 7th month) you should say しち月。

Hope that helps.

thank you this was really helpful, the explination & to the differen uses of しち & なな you didn’t give a context where なな is actually used

Michael says:

When counting, as for exercises while doing sit-ups or the like, which forms of 4-7-9 are preferred and why?

Same question for people, particularly when dining out in a group of 4.

I know that technically this could go in a post about counters rather than just the numbers 1-10, but I hope you will pardon my imprecision and answer it here anyway.

In the film Ju-on, before this one girl gets killed, her cell phone says “44444444..”
I didn’t get the connection until now - thanks!
