I can't tell you what an improvement this makes, having the transcript available to follow the conversation. Here is where we get to hear some real japanese talk, with the normal hesitations and interjections people use in everyday life. I was surprised that both Natsuko and Take were so unfamiliar with the world of independent films, but this may be because of a difference in what such films are inside and outside of Japan. In the USA, independent films no longer present an image of avant-gardism or narrow focus, but are often widely popular, plot and character driven, with major actors and directors involved. Even the enormously popular My Big, Fat, Greeki Wedding was an indie, produced for only $5 million while raking in nearly $300,000. So, while there are many "experimental" and "nocommercial" indies, there are just as many that are meant for general audiences and with aspirations to make money. Most such films are simply independent of the major studios' financing, with the money raised privately. The same directors and stars who work for the big studios frequently appear in indies. And, of course, many indie actors and directors are complete unknowns.
