Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! When you first meet someone in Japan, what are the first things you want to learn about that person? To get to know that Japanese person, what might you ask him or her in Japanese? You might break the ice by asking questions in Japanese about the person’s work history-that’s general background information that will tell you a lot about a person, right? And then you’d probably ask next in Japanese about where the person is from and inquire about his or her interests in Japanese to find some common ground so you can keep the conversation going in Japanese. By asking questions such as these, you’ll likely develop a new Japanese friendship. Well, get ready to make a new Japanese friend today!

みなさん、こんにちは! Welcome to the first blog entry of Audio Blog Season 3. This blog is written by Mr. Takamura, our first male audio blog writer. Please welcome him with a message here!

IMHO, this entry is a very good example of what you might consider doing for advanced lessons. The interview format is conducive to bringing out natural Japanese conversation with lots of interesting and helpful expressions for us to learn. This one was done in quite formal style which is fine. Others could be more like causal banter among friends. Just my 2cents

You think that’s good practice then you should search the podcast directory on itunes. I recommend Suntory Saturday Waiting Bar Avanti

is 集う (つどう) the origin for the number puzzle sudoku?
Monday at 11:04 am
テッド-san
Actually, no.
Suudoku is written as 数独 in Kanji.
It’s spelled in sudoku in English, but it’s got a long “u” sound.

Welcome, 高村さん!
Great start to the new advanced lessons. The people at Jpod101.com made a great 企画. Natsuko sensei, specially, did a very good 運営.
There’s a 多種多様 of vocabulary and my 思惑 is to 遂げる a better understanding of spoken japanese.
特に、I think it was a very good idea to include the word-by-word interview transcript.

Awesome!
Finally another guy voice on jpod101!
While the girls all have very nice voices, I feel silly trying to imitate naomi or natsuko’s tone of voice and pitch when i’m a guy with a deep voice.
Please have more of this guy on the show, his voice is similar to mine and I’d like to practice imitating how he speaks japanese so I can speak more naturally.
すごいいレッサンですよ

Jですさん
So please keep listening to Mr. Takamura and get your Japanese butch! Grrrr!
Yes!! You have the right idea about listening to more male Japanese! がんばってくださいね! I can’t tell you the number of non-Japanese men I’ve met who sound like girls when they speak Japanese… not their fault, just down to the facts that a) most Japanese teachers are women and human beings learn by imitation and b) that textbooks obviously teach polite (= feminine) Japanese! One of my everlasting memories will be of in first year of university, my (female) Japanese teacher teaching us how to make telephone calls, and having all the guys in the class say “じゃバイバイ!” at the end of the conversation…

@Kat
haha, yea that’s what I’m trying to avoid.
You guys should interview some yakuza, or japanese men over age 50, the ones who always grunt and talk really low. Those accents sound the coolest. I remember one lesson from jpod where yakuza were talking about their kitty charm, but that was it. hahaha
じゃね!

I searched the internet about these moviemaker Takamura san mentioned in this blog, named マッドシティー and I found a funny clip
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnL4fjMzsSU
Is that the guy Takamura san wants to talk about?
Monday at 1:02 pm
これはいいですね!興味深い話は聞けるようです。
私はサンフランシスコ出身ですが、今サンフランシスコの日本町に「New People」というギャラリーカフェーみたいな所があります。現代日本文化を中心にしていろいろなイベントがあったり、作品が展示したりします。サンフランシスコに行く方がいたら、ぜひ行ってみてください。
ところで、こちらも初めてのJapanese Pod101に投稿したコメントですが、よろしくおねがいします。

Now that Japanesepod101.com has finally included a real Japanese conversation (the interview between Natsuko and Takamura)–a giant step forward for these lessons–how about going a bit further and adding a few helpful notes for some of the trickier passages? I’m not saying a full translation is necessary, but there are a few problematic places where some of us could benefit from useful feedback. For example, the word マッドシテイ, which is surely a gairaigo but is not immediately recognizable nor in the dictionary (it’s probably very obvious), or why Takamura says げん担ぎ rather than just 担ぎ. Anyway, it’s something to consider, ね.

kabukiguy-san,
Thank you for your great feedback! I like the idea about adding some notes, and we would like to consider it!
