This is really great stuff. Although, I have a side question, I was wondering what 申し訳ありません means, rather (I know the meaning) when would it be used? Could you give me a particular setting/context where it could be used? Just to be sure, it does mean I’m sorry, correct? :???:

all the best,
Israel

I really like these lessons. They are very useful but I have a few questions on the lesson notes that maybe you can help me with. In the vocabulary section you give the meaning of 遠慮 (えんりょ) as “restraint, reserve, discretion”. Then on page 5 you give the definition of えんりょ as “consideration for others”. I am confused as to which meaning applies. Does it have anything to do with writing it in kanji or hiragana ? Also, it just so happens, one of the kanji flash cards I am studying is 心 which is used in 心配 (しんぱい). Is there any significance that some of the nouns you listed for もんたい3 include the kanji and some don’t ?

Thanks and keep up the good work.

Yes.申し訳ありません does mean “I’m sorry” and it’s used in formal situation.

Actually both translations are correct. As you can see in the dictionary, Enryo can be translated in many ways and the which definition you take is really depends on the context. But the simplest translation would be…
遠慮(えんりょ)するenryosuru means “to behave with modesty in order to consider for others.”
We only put the Kanji which JLPTN4 examinees are supposed to know. For example, しんぱい can be written as 心配 in Kanji, however this word has never tested the reading in the Kanji section in last 5years, that’s why we put it in Hiragana.(Of course there’s a high chance, it will appear in the future though  )

Please forget about Kanji level of vocab and sample sentence the Page2. They’re automatically selected by computer.

Hello Naomi-Sensei
which level are you targetting again: the old JLPT4, the new JLPT-N4 or the new JLPT-N5?
regards from germany
Thomas

JLPT Season 2 is targeting New JLPT-N4 (Which is the same level as old JLPT3)
JLPT season 1 was targeting Old JLPT4 (Which would be the same level as New JLPT-N5)

Hello!
Thank you for the lessons I’m going to put them on my ipod so I can have a good listen over the next few days!
I took jlpt 4 in december and this year i want to take level3/N4!
Does that mean that all of the study material for the old level 3 will still apply to N4? Like vocab lists and kanji lists on the internet or are they changing the content for N4?
Thanks!

Jessi says:

jennaさん,
Yes, N4 is the equivalent of the old 3kyu, so the vocab and kanji lists will be more or less the same  Ganbatte kudasai!

One question about suru verbs: In my textbooks and in this lesson as well, suru verbs are listed as “Verb Suru” or “Verb をSuru”. My question is: are there times when を MUST be used or must NOT be used? Or is it just a matter of preference? That is, is it equally OK to always use をor never use it? Thank you.

I’d say 電話をする(でんわをする)Denwa o suru “to call” sounds more formal than 電話する.
Other than that, when there’s another object, を before する has to be omitted.
EX)
英語を勉強する(えいごをべんきょうする)Eigo o benkyou suru“To study English” is OK. But you CANNTO say 英語を勉強をする.

I hope this helps.

watermen says:

おもいものを もったので、( こし ) が いたい。

May I know what is the meaning of this sentence please? I really don’t get it. Thanks.

avatar
Jessi says:

watermenさん,
This means “My back hurts because I held/carried something heavy.”

I have a sentence that needs correcting how about this…. Furedi son wa doshite ga anata no shogoto ageri kurai san renkyuu sorewa watashi o hanshite anata shirikani desu ka? (Fred, Why didn’t you tell me that you have a job that gives you about 3 days off?) I am not sure if I used the particles properly! I would appreciate it if you look over this. Arigato G!

Naomi says:

Ivonne C. Goodman-san
I’m afraid to say that your Japanese sentence you gave us was a bit incomprehensible for me…
If you need the translation for “Fred, Why didn’t you tell me that you have a job that gives you about 3 days off?”, that would be “Fred-san, doushite mikkakan shigoto ga nai koto o oshiete kurenakatta n desu ka?”. OF course there are other possible translations though.

I hope this helps.

I have quesiton about particle which used in the follow sentences at this course.

Firstly, the meaning of と at the sentence of 有名なこのケーキは、確かにおいしいと感じた
Secondly,もin the sentence of このケーはちっともおいしくない。

Thanks
Robert

Robert Lee says:

I am sorry about second question. Please ignore it.

avatar
Naomi says:

Robert Lee-san
>>Firstly, the meaning of と at the sentence of 有名なこのケーキは、確かにおいしいと感じた
→ This “to (と)” is a quotation-marker used at the end of a quote. It often marks the content of action such as omou “to think”, kanjiru “to feel”, kiku “to hear” and so on.
ex)
—to omou = I think that—
—to kanjiru = I feel that—

Though I think you have already got the answer for your second question, “chittomo” is one word meaning “(not) at all” and used in a negative sentence.

I hope this makes sense.
