みなさん★ Last year we did a lesson series for those studying for Level 4 of the JLPT - Japanese Language Proficiency Test. This year, we’re starting this series which is for those studying for the NEW Level 4 (N4), which is the equivalent of the old Level 3. To all of those planning to take the test… 一緒にがんばりましょう!

Yippee. Not feeling too optimistic about my shockingly relaxed prep for last year’s level 3, so this could be useful.

I believe that 日本語能力試験 has changed formats. It’d be nice to have an quick overview the reason why the change, and a breakdown of what is needed to study for each particular level. I passed one of these several years ago, and am considering taking the next level. でも、どっちか受けるかはっきるではありません。

Is there any chance on this developing for the N3 and N2 tests also?

I’m planning on going straight to N3 which seems to be a possible favorite as companies will be seeing this as a required minimum in the future

Thank-you for a great lesson and especially for the text-friendly format of the PDF files -which saves me alot of time.

I like the suggestion made in the audio lesson to practice the kanji by writing them out. .. So I miss the Kanji Notes for this lesson, since I do not yet know how to draw them …

Here’s an idea for your premium reference center:
Be able to select Kanji from “My Kanji Bank” or “My Word Bank” and then click a button to get a printer-friendly Practice page for forming each Kanji selected.

That would be great !

Thanks for listening to the new JLPT series everyone!

Dan Roddyさん,
Great!! がんばってください

Russさん,
You’re on luck! The official JLPT site has a guidebook for the new JLPT in the form of a PDF that covers those questions you had and more:
http://www.jlpt.jp/e/about/pdf/guidebook_e.pdf

Garethさん,
There is a possibility in the future! If companies do start to use N3 as a minimum requirement, this might be a good one to cover.

mypodjap-loves-japaneseさん,
I’ve heard that writing down information helps you remember and retain it better (this applies not only to Japanese, but to anything!)
That’s a great idea you have - we’ll consider it

Naomi sensei, you gave perhaps some of the best advice I’ve heard in a while

When you learn a new adjective also learn the opposite adjective. This is so simple, yet I’ll be the first to admit I haven’t done it this way.

Perhaps it is because I think that if I just learn “重い” then I can easily express both concepts by using the negative of omoi “omokunai”. Although this strategy has helped me express ideas easier (although much more unnaturally), it definitely shows its limitation when others speak to me… it leads to some frustrating conversations when others rightfully assume that since I know “重い” that I also understand “軽い” in their replies (when I don’t).

新しい日本語能力試験受験かありがとう!すごく良いアイディアだよね!
I agree with Garethさん: A similar prep course for level N3 would probably be a very good idea. I would attend! ;o)

The official JPT website doesn’t appear to be updated, yet, so I didn’t find any information if it will be possible to take all N-level’s tests in summer. So far it has only been levels 1 and 2… Do you know anything about that?

コンスタンティンさん,
Hello!! Thanks for commenting!

An English guidebook for the new test can be found here on the JLPT website:
http://www.jlpt.jp/e/about/pdf/guidebook_e.pdf

It doesn’t say anything specific about which levels can be taken in the summer, so I’m assuming all of them can be, but I’m not 100% sure. It does say, though, that not all countries/areas will be offering the July test. I think we just have to wait for more new information from them at this point.

Is last year’s lesson series for old N4 (new N5) still available?
I’m planning to take N5 in December of this year and need to know how to study.

Jessi says:

N5-san,

Yes, the lessons for JLPT 4 (N5) can be found here:

Best of luck on the test!

Thomas says:

This is probably a very stupid question since noone has asked it before. I realized that in each section of the test the number of points are different from the number of questions. For example in section 1 of the 2009 test, there were 100 points awarded for 55 questions. Is this just a conversion to percentages or are some questions more important than others?

Dk says:

That was truly great advice! Thank you!
I was very confused on which Kanji I should concentrate on the most
This will be my first time taking the JLPT and I’m going straight to N4. Thought we would just have to recognize the kanji, will we need to provide both On and Kun readings? >_
