Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! “I’m sorry.” “I’m sorry.” You repeat the phrase again because you just stepped on the foot of your boss’s boss and scuffed his very polished shoes to boot. Fortunately, he’s a reasonable fellow, and he knows you didn’t do it on purpose. It was probably a really good thing that you apologized in Japanese. You’re sure he appreciated that. Now what? He steps back and tells you it’s all right, accidents happen. Undoubtedly, he tells you, you were focused on your responsibilities and didn’t notice much else going on around you. You’re very grateful, not only for his graciousness but for your Japanese lessons that allow you to answer in Japanese, “Thank you.” He tells you to please go ahead with what you were doing. You make your exit as gracefully as you can and mutter another, “I’m sorry,” in Japanese. Thank goodness for those language lessons.

Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! You’ve just sat down for dinner at your in-laws’ house, and your Japanese mother-in-law is bringing out the main course. She announces in Japanese, “I decided to try to make something different tonight…I tried to make some pork barbecue.” You tell her in Japanese, “That sounds great! I can’t wait to try it!” She responds in Japanese, “I wanted to learn more about American culture, so this is a good first step.” As she piles some barbecue on your plate, you study its texture carefully…that doesn’t look like any barbecue you’ve ever seen! Nonetheless, you thank her profusely in Japanese, pick up a fork, and dig in. As you start to chew the pork, your mother-in-law turns to you and asks in Japanese, “Well, what do you think?” You put your finger up to indicate that you’re still chewing and will respond in a second…but a minute later, you’re still chewing! Finally, after your spouse kicks you, you push the meat to the side of your mouth, grit your teeth, and say in Japanese, “It’s got a great chewy texture-just like my mom makes back home!”
