Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! Your friend says in Japanese, “You must see this! You won’t believe it. I think it’s one of the most beautiful shrines in all of Japan.” You ask him in Japanese, “What is it called?” He explains in Japanese, “It’s the Izumo Taisha shrine. It’s special and different from the other shrines in Japan. At certain times of the year, eight million deities come to the shrine and hold conversations.” You answer him in Japanese, “Surely that’s really noisy, and how do they all fit in the shrine?” Your Japanese friend gives you one of those looks that says he knows you’re just joking, but be careful with comments like that. Still, he appreciates your sense of humor because he smiles, too, as he begins to explain further in Japanese, “Let me explain the ritual for this shrine, because it’s different than other Japanese shrines.” You answer gratefully in Japanese, “Thank you. I do want to see the shrine. We’ve been to a number of them in the past few months, and they were all impressive and thought provoking. How many Japanese shrines are there?” He answers in Japanese, “Thousands. And we’d better get going if we’re going to visit them all.”

Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! Your friend asks you in Japanese, “What do you think of the idea?” Your answer, in Japanese, is tentative and slightly irritated, although not at your friend. “I don’t know. It seems simple enough. The students make their own lunches five times during the year. Why the hassle? It doesn’t make sense to me. How many days a year are the students in school?” Your friend offers an uncertain Japanese answer, “I’m not sure, maybe 180?” You correct him in your irritated Japanese, “Not really, more like 210 days. For them to make their own lunches only five days in all that time is less than one time in two months. Surely this is a trivial thing.” Your Japanese friend begins to understand why your attitude is different than that of others. He explains in Japanese, “Ah, maybe you don’t quite understand the cultural thing. Traditions here go back thousands of years. We don’t change things easily or quickly. Having our kids make their own lunches five times a year might seem like nothing to you, but it makes Japanese households very stressful five times a year. Do you understand?” You’ve studied enough Japanese language and culture to understand what your friend is saying. “Yes, I can see that. Thank you for making me understand…now you just have a few more households all over Japan to go.”

Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! Your job hunting in Japan was successful; you landed a great job. You passed all the tests in Japanese, and you have impressed your boss with your work. Now, however, you face another challenge. You must negotiate your way to work on the Japanese train system. You’ve heard tales from your Japanese friends about the horrors of the trains, people rushing to get in at the last minute, people squashed against each other for the long ride into the city. It sounded dreadful, but it’s still the quickest, least expensive way to get to work. In the train station, you begin to notice the signs, not the signs for where to find the train of your choice, but signs in Japanese saying, “Slow down, don’t rush.” Good advice on those posters. You can’t imagine rushing into the train doors right before they close. It sounds so dangerous. What if the doors didn’t stay open as you pushed through them? Would the train start moving with you stuck in the doors?! Surely not, but you don’t know for sure. Fortunately, you meet one of your co-workers on the platform and you help each other to negotiate the Japanese trains.
