You can use causative for non living things. However for your sentence case( to say “to make something in a certain state” ), it would be natural to use [adverbial form of adjective ]＋suru.

I was big into commenting in Peter-san's heyday. Gotta say though, all the Japanese I didn't understand in this 'lower' intermediate lesson is pretty depressing :( I'm sure it would help with the lesson notes but next to the other study tools I use, the sites fees are just outrageous, or atleast out of my reach at the moment.
