Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! The essential question is “Were you taken advantage of or not?” The Japanese salesman talked you into buying a motorcycle! A Japanese motorcycle. You had gone to the showroom to look at them, but not because you were really serious about buying one. You just thought they looked great. Japanese motorcycles are known for their unusual, ground-breaking designs. The salesman was so nice, and he didn’t insult your ignorance of motorcycles, and he was patient. And he told you that story about being worried about his job if he didn’t sell another motorcycle this month. You didn’t want him to lose his job, and you really liked the Japanese designs. So you felt a little sorry for him…and you went the full distance. You got all the gear. Now, you’re going to surprise your friend by arriving for lunch by motorcycle. You call out to your girlfriend in Japanese, “You still have three blocks to walk to the restaurant. Wouldn’t you like to ride?” Puzzled, she asks in Japanese, “Do I know you?” Remembering your helmet, you yell out over the roaring engine in Japanese, “Wait, let me take this helmet off. There.” Shocked, she yells back in Japanese, “What are you doing on this motorcycle?” Proudly, you reply, “I bought it? How do you like it?” Attempting to be supportive, your girlfriend stammers and finally offers in Japanese, “But how can a girl ride a motorcycle?”

皆さん、
Have you ever done something after being swayed by your emotions like the wife in this dialog?
Friday at 6:55 am
I could understand very little of the discussion in this lesson — and that’s ok because I am not to this level yet. More and more I realize that I enjoy it when more than just the lesson dialog is in Japanese. I think that you certainly do have more Japanese in the advanced the lessons but I am not really sure that you are building us up to that in the lower lessons (please give more clues to the context during the discussion in lower lessions). I think that the Englishpod lessons seem to do a really good job at this in general.
I think it would also be helpful to have some kind of reference on your website for commonly used sentences. For example in the review track for the intermediate lessons, the whole introduction and the part where Jessi-さんsays ‘now we’ll switch it up…” could be in Japanese instead of English at least in the more advanced lessons. If you did that I would appreciate a reference to help me learn those phrases.
Thanks

If you don’t like the taste of your tap water then contact your local water treatment centre or buy a filter or make tea. I have drunk tap water all over Japan. If I had bought all of my drinking water I could not have afforded to travel all over Japan.

Thank you for your great feedback! We’re going to consider them.
ポーリンさん、
日本語の会話が上達するためのコツですね。Jessiさんが答えてくれると思いますよ~
katakanadian-san,
Actually, it’s said that the tap water in Tokyo has been improved so much and Tokyo city puts the tap water in Tokyo into a bottle and selling them as Tokyo water.

ポーリンさん,
Well, I’m no Anthony
but I’ll share some advice on things I have done.
First, obviously, the best thing to do would be to speak with native speakers, but this is not always possible. You may want to practice talking to yourself. Try explaining what you did that day, or tell some interesting story, as if you were talking to a native speaker. Look up any words/phrases you get stuck on and commit them to memory. I keep a notebook of such phrases that I find myself needing to use and not able to come up with right away.
I also recommend keeping a journal in Japanese. Naturally, this helps your writing skills, but I believe it can also help your speaking as well. Keep a journal of what you do and how you feel everyday. As you keep writing day after day, you’ll find that you probably use the same words/expressions a lot. This kind of repetition is good for your brain - then, when those things come up in conversation, they should be at the forefront of your brain, ready to use. I hope that makes sense. Give it a try and see how it goes
