Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! “Did you buy your ticket?” your friend asks in Japanese. “What ticket?” you answer. You didn’t know you needed a ticket. You didn’t even know what you were going to do that you needed a ticket for. Sometimes, you’re easily confused, especially when it comes to Japanese. “Autumn Jumbo,” your friend says excitedly in Japanese, “It’s the biggest chance to win money in Japan, 200 million yen. 200 million yen! You better hurry up…read the poster! There is a limited number of tickets available!” Confused as usual, you ask in Japanese, “What do you mean it’s a chance to win money? How do you win money? Do I still have time?” Your friend patiently explains the rules of the game in Japanese and you begin to understand. It’s sort of like the lottery back home, only the rules are a little different. Another friend shouts in Japanese, “If you don’t hurry up, they’ll sell out!” Your Japanese friends gather round to tell you how excited they are about the upcoming announcement of the winner. They all bought tickets - some bought a lot! Still filled with a million questions, you ask in Japanese, “Do you win something if you only get a few of the numbers right?” However, they don’t seem to know all the rules either. They all have their eyes on the immense first prize of 200 million yen. Still probing, you ask in Japanese, “What about taxes? Do you have to pay Japanese taxes on the winnings if you win?” Your question is met with blank stares and shrugs. Their eyes are beginning to glaze over at all your questions. Maybe you should just let them have their fun…

Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! How does he do it, you wonder. You have seen him time and again penetrate right to the heart of any situation and then say the perfect thing in Japanese. If the situation is tense, his lighthearted jokes in Japanese will make everyone relax without embarrassing anyone. If someone is embarrassed, he knows just how to phrase his Japanese so as to make them feel as if the moment never happened. When people are sad, his words make them feel better right away. You have seen him diffuse the angry mood in a room with just a couple of well-spoken Japanese phrases. Sometimes this worries you. He seems to have such power and influence over the people around him that you fear his intentions. Could he be using such dominion for ill? Has he unduly influenced your decisions, especially your decisions about him? Are his intentions benign or is he a modern day, in-the-flesh Svengali?
