Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! Shakespeare said, “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” What about in Japanese? You bet, and in Japanese, you have the problem of different names for the same thing in different parts of the country. “Not here in the USA,” I hear you say. Don’t bet on it. What’s a poke? Not the verb or the noun that means a jab. Another poke. If you’re from Chicago, I bet you don’t know. If you’re from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, I bet you do. How about a grinder? Do you know the difference between a grinder and a submarine? How about a frappe? Which would you rather have, a milkshake or a frappe? Think carefully before answering that one. What about the difference between “a mess of potatoes” and “a whole mess of potatoes?” Careful how you answer these questions. The wrong answers might label you as a real clod.

Sushi, sashimi, yakitori, tempura, even natto can all be found if you follow the trail of students with their noses in the air. Be prepared to brandish your chopsticks with gusto when you find those special places that really know Japanese food and keep prices reasonable.
